Elective C-Section Advice

Hi Ladies

just wondering if anyone would know when roughly you would be told "when" you will be having your elective c section ?

I am 23 weeks pregnant, have an appointment with my consultant on Monday.

I have consultant led care because of BP issues, first pregnancy i was induced at 38 weeks because of BP being high, the hospital gave me syntocin via drip to kick start labour however 12 hours later i was only 4 cms dilated, baby was distressed, and BP got dangerously high- ended up having emergency section- which was all fine.

Just wondered if they tend to perfom sections earlier and if they give you a date a few months beforehand ?

Hi In a bit of a rush but didnt want to ignore you - i was told at 28 weeks and meant to have section at 38 weeks my first birth very similar to yours.

However every area and consultant does it differently so probably best just to aske when your in next x

Some will schedule really early (mine was at 24 weeks, but I knew I wasn't seeing that doctor again until the birth.. long story!) but others will literally a week or so before. I guess it depends on the doctor and the hospital!

Sparklies · 09/03/2011 12:56

btw most UK doctors will never schedule a c-section before 38 weeks unless there is some life and death issue involved if baby is not whipped out within minutes of something happening like Vasa Previa. I can't be allowed to labour for long due to a permanent stitch but nobody will schedule me before 38 weeks. Most doctors will do 39 weeks but go back possibly as far as 38 in exceptional circumstances like mine.

I'm scheduled for 38w2d and don't think for a minute I will get that far, thanks to my previous PTL issues and the fact I make big babies but we shall see.

I have just had mine booked at my 32 week appointment (repeat CS due to suspected pelvic disproportion), for bang on 39 weeks. It is not an issue if I go into labout first though - they will just do an emergency section if it looks as if I need one.

faverolles · 09/03/2011 13:56

Mine was booked the week before I had it. I was 38w6d. This is the earliest my local hospital would do an elcs, and this was because it was my 4th cs.
Dc2 was born at 40weeks, dc3 at 39w4d.

twice they've given me a date at 20 weeks (after the anomaly scan), this time I booked it after the 12 week scan. First two were at 38 weeks (after a EMCS at 36+ with dd1), this one will be at 37 weeks & I'll have steroids. I have a horrible obstetric history hence they earlier than usual sections (39 weeks is standard here).

mummysweeangel1 · 09/03/2011 14:27

thanks for the replies everyone. I am really quite anxious about the whole thing, at least with the last one i was on gas and air beforehand so quite relaxed, but this time round i feel scared about just walking into theatre - sound really stupid and immature Blush

doesn't sound stupid at all! I have had wonderful experiences with my electives but I'm still incredibly nervous the night & morning before. Once you get to theatre it's fine, but walking down is scary.

MarineIguana · 09/03/2011 15:34

I was given a date when I was about 32 weeks I think. The date was one week before my official due date, so 39 weeks. However I went into labour a few days earlier than that, and ended up with another EMCS (like the first time). It was all fine but I was kind of annoyed I hadn't had the lovely, peaceful and pain-free planned CS I had in mind. I was kind of looking forward to having my wits about me and taking it in properly!

StormInaCCup · 09/03/2011 16:03

I have had my date pencilled in from about 20 weeks, and will get my section bang on 39 weeks. My consultant obs did say that we would 'firm' up the time/ date closer to the time as she didn't want to jinx anything though which made me a bit Hmm at the time.

AngieM2 · 09/03/2011 16:09

hi there, elective CS in our local trust is 39 weeks bang on (unless the diary is already full!) A

Chynah · 09/03/2011 18:09

First ELCS got date at 37 weeks for 39+1
Second got date at 29 weeks for 39 weeks exactly.

I will book the date at my consultant appt on 1st April.
Will go for as near to due date (10th May)as possible - last time I think I was 2 days early.
My experience of the planned C-section with DS2 was great (esp when compared with the emergency one I had with DS1).

I like to leave them in there for as long as possible so they are properly cooked! Having said that, the last couple of weeks of pg are so vile I sometimes regret this decision.

CharlieTango · 09/03/2011 22:19

If it helps, I saw the consultant at 35 weeks (whcih did feel pretty late to me!), got the go ahead at the consultation (had Emergency CS with DS and this is an ELCS). Was told by midwife that it would either be 38 +5 or 39+5, and she called later that day to give me CS date of 38 +5.

Still haven't had any info from hospital about when I'm meant to turn up or what time they've planned the section for but seeing midwife tomorrow and will find out what's up (hopefully). Am just relieved to have got go ahead and not have induction hell/failure to progress like last time - phew!
