DH cooked salmon, which I presumed would be well done as I'm 10 weeks pregnant.

As I was eating it, I thought it felt a bit undone and I said to him "it's well done isn't it" and he replied to my horror " no it's not".

He knows I'm not meant to eat anything raw ( I do most of the cooking anyway) so I was shocked and vomited (sorry tmi). I hope most of it is gone, and I'm trying to drink hot tea - yes, I am hoping it will cook whatever is left :(

What do you think? Anything I can do now? If I get poisoning how soon will I know? I'm terrified and pissed off, he knows I shouldn't and because we don't have salmon often I didn't expect the texture to be a certain way...

Oh god. Had a miscarriage just before this pregnancy and now I worry that either I will loose this baby too or it will get some permanent damage...

You will be fine. If the salmon wasn't off or contaminated what's the problem? I often eat salmon on the undercooked side, from choice.

PoisPois · 08/03/2011 20:07

Don't worry - you'll be fine. I've been munching on sushi and haven't been poorly.

You'd be incredibly unlucky to get food poisoning from a piece of slightly undercooked fish.

thank you Abr1de, somehow fish seems scarier to me than undercooked beef say...it's just that it felt proper undercooked in the middle, almost raw. I appreciate your opinion, it helps a lot now.

You can eat raw fish as long as it was frozen beforehand, not much help if it wasn't i know !

fishfear · 08/03/2011 20:26

Thanks for the link winnybella. What worries me is that I remember reading that sushi gets deep frozen first and that kills bacteria, it was supermarket salmon that I had and that's why I was worried. I wouldn't mind undercooked beef or lamb but salmon did it because I don't have it often.

It's been really helpful and reassuring to read your comments, I feel fear-free now!

Yes, but the link seems to say that listeria, toxo et al are not really a risk with raw fish.

That is, if it has been contaminated with listeria-well, then yes, I guess, but seriously, you can get it from lettuce etc-it's not like Fish &meat are the most likely sources of that iyswim.

I remember reading an article that said that most food poisoning is actually due to vegetables or undercooked chicken, sorry, don't remember- raw fish etc wasn't really a big cause.

Honestly, I very much doubt you have anything to worry about. It is very, very unlikely that it was contaminated with listeria- if you look up the stats, there's only a few cases a year- maybe a 100 or similar.

If it came from a reputable source I really wouldn't worry.

thanks winnybella!

Basically, there's more chances (even though very little) of getting some sort of food poisoning that would make you ill, but not the baby iyswim, whatever all the American websites say.

When I was pg I ate fois gras, sushi etc- but all from reputable producers. I would be more wary of Chinese that has been sweating ina shop all day iyswim

I mean even ham can be contaminated by listeria-does it stop you buying packets of sliced ham? IRRC listeria likes cold so anything from a fridge aisle could potentially be dangerous.

Just relax Smile

If you're ever worried again, just zap the item in question very quickly in the microwave. I've done this with salmon before. I like it slightly on the undercooked side, but my husband really does not! So I zap his for 20-30 seconds until it's done to his taste.
