Sick of feeling fat

Grrrrrr! Just need a rant about piling on the pounds - I've put on a stone and a half and I'm 24+2. I actually don't care that much - my theory is as long as I'm eating healthily any extra weight I can shift AFTER the baby is born. My priority is the health and wellbeing of my baby, not looking waif like with a tiny grapefruit size bump at nearly 6 months pregnant!

However EVERYONE from my mum to friends to work colleagues have commented on my size eg 'you're soooo big', 'imagine how big you'll be at 9 months', 'you're definitely having girl cos you're carrying it all on your backside!' etc etc. Usually this wouldn't bother me but it is really starting to p* me off. Wish I had some witty retort! Anyone got any good ones?

Bless my DP though - he keeps telling me I look exactly the same from behind. God I love that man for lying!

I'm now 38 weeks and a few days (never can keep count) and had this all through my pregnancy.....some say I'm huge, some say i'm so small. To the people who called me huge I often said "Isn't it funny, someone just said two minutes ago how small i was" and smile sweetly. This often starts them on some kind of semi-retraction about how they're not saying i'm fat blah blah blah.......I find it amusing to watch them squirm.

Although i do recall with a fair amount of shame at some of the comments i made to pregnant women before i became pregnant......you just don't realise what you're saying, often you just open your mouth and out plops all these terrible comments etc. without really meaning them Blush. It's hard to understand all the changes until you experience it Hmm

Take no notice - most people are no judge of pregnancy weight gain. They often are just used to seeing you a certain size and any change will look like a lot.

I had one woman tell me I was huge for 35 weeks and telling me the way I was carrying it must be a girl. I had only put on a stone and it was a boy which only goes to prove it is all guesswork. I said nothing but just did this - Hmm

It isn't just comments about putting on too much weight but not putting on enough that people feel they can talk about. With my other pregnancy, we went to order the cot from Mothercare and we were told it would take 7 weeks but that was apparently OK as the assistant reckoned I had ages to go yet. I was actually 34 weeks at the time so it was cutting it fine. When I told her she said I was really small and was I sure? Hmm I wish I had thought of a retort at the time but I was flabbergasted!

I wouldn't bother commenting just smiling sweetly and taking no notice - although I do like the idea of making them feel guilty now you come to mention it.Smile

I'm 23 weeks and have gained 2 stone.

I haven't had many comments from people either way, but I know and I feel like such a failure. Maybe it's because I look at those online calculators and can see how far off I am from what they're calling the 'norm'.

Before getting pregnant I sort of smugly assumed I'd be so good at it, such a slim, wonderful earth mother.

I just feel fat and angry and disappointed with myself all the time. I know it's silly, but that's just the way it is. Not sure how to snap out of it.

Oh, hallelujah! There's a whole bunch who feel the same.

I'm 28+2 & I know I've put on weight all over. About 2 stone in total. I went to the GP on Mon (totally unrelated) & when I mentioned being pregnant he hadn't realised. My mum has said I just look like a large lady. I think I'd rather just look pregnant.

No-one close to me has actually said I look good - which I know means that I don't Sad

I even dreamt that someone in work commented on my size. My dream reply was "Well in a few weeks I'll have a lovely baby & be able to lose some weight. In a few weeks you'll still be an insensitive twat". I've LOVE to have the nerve to say it in RL.

LOL at Nagoo. Will have to remember that one Grin

Oooh, just give 'em a 'What's your excuse?' kind of retort ...

You are of course only gong to get bigger, but heck, it just means everythings doing the right thing. I'm 30 weeks now, and I'm happy to be told I'm whopping - imagine the worry if everyone told you that you were far too small?? My DH informed me I'm only a couple of weeks away from qualifying for my own postcode. I did what any other woman in my situation would do and sat on him :o

Deep breaths, chin up and crack on I say :) Good luck :)

Thanks Lolliebear - don't worry about the name, it's really just a Muriel's Wedding joke - I'm not that fat!

I think it's difficult with a first pregnancy because you can't even imagine the end. It seems to stretch on forever and all you can see is deterioration. And all you want to eat is cake. And nobody who hasn't experienced it has any idea what it's like, so they say crass things and make you want to hit them. I've definitely been guilty of this in the past.

I just remembered a comment from 'MIL': "you don't so much look pregnant as just out of shape". (this was at 30+ weeks with a definite bump shape and well into maternity clothes). Lovely. Mind you this is from the woman who rivals my own mum in disengaging brain before engaging mouth.

LionRock · 09/03/2011 14:52

As an aside, I am getting fed up with the lack of mobility. I don't mind how I look but am not looking forward to putting on more weight if it means even more problems getting up from a chair or out of bed or just getting around. I do a good line in sound effects - hoooagh! hurgh!

On a positive note, no matter how 'big' I feel I still feel like "whoah there" when I see a new baby or look at newborn clothes. They are a decent size after all so of course we look like we do!

MrsVidic · 09/03/2011 19:21

I've put on nearly a stone and am 19 weeks. I get constant comments of your not showing, which pisses me off as I don't usually look this bloated and I have a bump
