Just wondered if they could tell the sex at 20 weeks? I am so desperate to know and I have my 20 week scan next week.

yes, they can usually tell, have fun finding out!

juneau · 08/03/2011 10:36

Yes, they can see at 20 weeks, but depending on where you live they might not tell you. I live in West Herts and the HA here has a policy of not telling, even if you ask. I had to go for a private scan so we could find out.

ShowOfHands · 08/03/2011 10:38

Oh yes. You can even see sometimes at the 12 weeks scan now.

Bear in mind that some places won't tell you and some babies (like mine) have firmly closed legs and they can't see.

Charleigh0 · 08/03/2011 10:38

Oh right ok, will have to ask then!

yes but you have to ask, my friend went for a scan and at the end she said so what is it she said oh you didnt ask so didnt think you wanted to know, so as the scanner had been turned off it was too late, needless to say i hadnt even sat on bed and i was telling them i wanted to know!!! good luck!!

otchayaniye · 08/03/2011 10:47

I found out with my first at 11 weeks. This was in Asia and I had weekly scans. They said they could tell with girls easier than boys and with 80 pct certainty at that stage.

I'm going to find out myself in three weeks with this one (in UK) and if they won't tell me (I think they do at Kings in London) I'll get a private scan. In some ways it's not important, but I loved knowing with my first. Again, personal preference and I can totally see both sides of this issue. If I never found out I wouldn't be that troubled.

Charleigh0 · 08/03/2011 11:15

Yes I really want to know, but have a feeling my hospital won't tell me. Are private scans expensive? Or does it depend on the hospital?

We had a private gender scan as at the NHS scan she wouldn't cooperate. Cost us about £65. Where are you in the country?

Prinpo · 08/03/2011 11:31

My scan is on Thursday and we're not planning to find out as this is DC3 and we thought it would be nice to have a surprise.

Secretly, though, I'm desperate to know. Not sure what to do... Confused

ShowOfHands · 08/03/2011 11:40

Prinpo, a lot of places will write it down for you and put it in a sealed envelope. Then you can decide later on.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 08/03/2011 11:42

If you are in essex they wont tell you. Keep it a secret. Its lovely finding out when they hand him/her to you for the first time. Smile Im going to put im my next birth plan that I dont want to be told, I want to look for myself.

Debs75 · 08/03/2011 11:50

I found out with my first 2 as Dp wanted to know.
With my 3rd DD was with me so I found out for her.
With my 4th I was determind not to know, even though my best friend was adamant she would find out. In the end the sonographer couldn't see so I had to wait till birth. Unfortunately I had to have several more scans and even tho I told them I didn't want to know one of them let slip that 'she' was doing fine. I didmissed it and when she was born I told the MW I wanted to be the one to check. I still had to ask her to confirm it as I was going into shock when I first held her.
I would of rather not known with all of them but I can understand why some people want to know

Prinpo · 08/03/2011 19:59

ShowofHands, that's a brilliant idea. I may well ask them to do that, although I'm sure I wouldn't get as far as the car park before I peeked. It would be like a half-eaten Twix that calls to you from the fridge Smile.

We didn't find out with DD1, but did with DD2 and I have to admit that I liked knowing. This one, though, is our last and will be an elective section (as the other two were) so I feel a surprise would be lovely. Still...

AppleyEverAfter · 08/03/2011 20:16

I'm 12 weeks with my first and DH wants to know at 20 weeks. I didn't at first but having seen it, I'm mega-curious and now I think we're going to ask! Shock

Sparklies · 08/03/2011 20:36

Further to what ShowOfHands says, in America now judging from the US due date forums I'm on, there's a recent thing where the sonographer writes it down in an envelope.. then the parents take the envelope to a baker. The baker bakes a cake with a pink or a blue filling and ices it green (or neutral).

Then they have a grand old "Gender Reveal" party with loads of friends round and the cake is sliced and the sex revealed in front of everyone!

Not entirely sure it's my cup of tea (apart from "HEY CAKE!!!!") but it's a hit over there.

I'd love to have the patience to wait but realistically I'm studying scans even as early as 10 weeks. I am hopeless with surprises. Fetal Medicine Centre in London said definitively "boy" at 12w6d (it's 80% certainty based on the angle of the "nub" at this stage, not the presence of it) and she was right. Well, half a dozen scans since then have confirmed it and I'm now 31 weeks!

AppleyEverAfter · 09/03/2011 21:09

Sparklies, that is SO American! But yes, cake is always good... My side of family all want to know but DH's don't. Tut!
