...pineapples and raspberries while I'm pregnant?

I'm 10wks and keep reading different opinions about this on the internet! I can hardly stomach anything as it is and pineapple and raspberry smoothies were 2 of the few things on my edible list, but now I keep reading that they can induce labour or miscarriage... Confused

Has anyone else heard about this/have any info?

Also (while I'm at it!) is it ok to use an electric blanket? Again I've read loads of different things!

Thanks

Not sure about the electric blanket, I'm 21 weeks ATM and have eating pineapple and raspberries all this time and will continue to do so. Step away from google! It really is not your friend in times like this Grin

I completely second HL...leave google well alone!! There are many myths around! I am 25 weeks, eat pineapple most days at the moment and love raspberries, and did the same all the way through with dd! Don't worry! Don't know about the electric blanket to be honest but don't over worry yourself please! Have a look at the section on MN about pregnancy: dos and don'ts as that's actually quite helpful in terms of things you should avoid eating, mainly things that have a higher risk of leading to infections like blue cheese, raw shellfish..and they also direct you to the food standards agency.
Don't worry! And congrats! Smile

It's because pineapple and raspberries contain a chemical (can't remember it's name!) that your body naturally produces in the run up to labour, once the chemical reaches the right levels then labour begins. Because of this there are a lot of scare stories about how if you eat too many then you'll start premature labour or miscarriage.

It's a load of shite.

To get enough of that chemical you would have to eat around 30 whole pineapples, and by whole I mean the skin, the leaves, and the core as well as the flesh. It's just not possible and even if it was the chemical vanishes fairly quickly so by the time you ate the 30th one you'd all ready be rid of the chemical from the first ten. Same for raspberries, you'd need about 40lbs to get enough of the chemical.

The way I see it if pineapple and raspberries could kick start labour then the NHS wouldn't spend money on inductions, they'd just send you round to the fruit shop.

I went nuts for pineapple in the first 17 weeks of pregnancy. Could not get enough of the stuff. That and cups of tea! Now nearly 37 weeks and all good.

very few food will actually harm your baby and most of them can be finee and most of the harm will be if you get food poisoning.
All fruit is fine.

Agree with what everyone else has said. For pineapple to actually do anything you have to eat a insane amount of fresh pineapple.
Google is a pregnant womans worse nightmare because its full of things that just aren't true.

Congratulations by the way :)

Thanks everyone, much calmer now! I think I'm gonna take a break from google for a while!

C'mon now! If pineapples and raspberries could induce labour, why would women have spent centuries inducing abortions in painful, and life threatening ways?

eastegg · 09/03/2011 16:39

I'm 12 weeks and have been eating pineapple this pregnancy. I think SIL reckoned you couldn't (she also thought you couldn't have Philadelphia because it's 'soft cheese'). Lots of silly ideas out there. If in doubt ask your midwife/GP (my GP gave me the official NHS bumph about it all, and I even think some of that's over the top).

nunnie · 09/03/2011 16:43

I suffer from ulcers and was always told to eat pineapple as it's good for them (probably not true but I don't care I love it), also I eat alot of raspberries in pregnancy as I love summer fruits, and the need for them increases when I am expecting.

Never read that you can't, but you can check reputable sites or speak to your midwife if you are still concerned.

iWILLdothis · 09/03/2011 18:51

My midwife suggested pineapple as a good food when feeling really nauseous....I've been eating lots & lots ever since....
