Hi ladies,

I stopped taking my pregnancy vitamins at 13 weeks because i lost them Blush and didnt bother getting any more, had read on t'internet that they were only really necessary for the first 12 weeks for foetal development due to the folic acid content.

Im just over 23 weeks now and was talking to a friend the other day who told me that she took them the whole way through as she wanted to breastfeed Confused i do also.
My diet is quite healthy and i eat lots of fruit and veg, keep hydrated and drink milk etc so im assuming i'll be ok. Anyone else not taking them anymore?? (they aint cheap either are they!!)

Thanks Smile

My midwife also told me they are advising women to take them all the way through pregnancy now. I have to take asprin every morning, so take them then. (pregnacare with omega 3) Although occasionally I can't face the huge horse sized tablets on top of the asprin, so I do miss the odd day of vitamins.

piston - I also take a calcium supplement, but you have to be careful to get one that doesn't also have vitamin A in it. Also, it's probably worth just checking with a doctor or midwife first. I don't know about milk allergies - sorry.

I'm still taking mine at 25 weeks. Partly because when I was TTC I bought a 9 month supply when they were 3for2 at boots and only took 3 months to conceive. Also my iron count was about nil by the time my DS was born and I'm so tired now that I figure I could do with the extra iron. I don't take them religously every day though.

If you're eating well and healthy there shouldn't be a problem with you not taking a supplement.

association of late folate supplementation and childhood asthma. There is an interesting association in the results section, where maternal smoking AND early pg folate supplementation ALSO causes a rise in asthma - but that is pretty much ignored in the discussion/conclusion. They also cannot rule out that it might be linked to some other component of the multivitamin that most women took in later pregnancy. Not cut and dried as a result.

Raw sprouts - I hope you're joking, not because that would be unpleasant but raw cruciferous vegetables contain quite high levels of phytates, which happily bind to the mineral ions in the vegetable and prevent you from absorbing them. Steam your veg first - saves some of the vitamin C and releases the minerals so you can absorb them.
