How many nappies will you get in the newborn size and how many nappies do you think newborns get through a day, approx of course :)

I think before I gave birth each time I had approx 200 nappies ready in the house - I remember couting!
I would say 8 or so a day is a good guess for the first couple of months, then they might be moving up a size and should certainly be using fewer nappies too.

So I suppose my guess is about 480 nappies Shock. I think that's worst case though.

i bought approx 300 nappies before dd2 was born and i have about 50 left. she's 8 weeks.

so thats about 4-5 nappies a day?

btw i skipped size 1 nappies and went straight to size 2.

mousymouse · 06/03/2011 10:08

I bought 2 packs (one double value pack) and then went to buy as needed.
dd was large, over 9 pounds, so we needed the next size after 2 weeks...

mumatron · 06/03/2011 10:10

actually i'm lying. i bought an extra pack of 90 odd, so it's probably more like 6-7 nappies a day.

2and1ontheway · 06/03/2011 10:23

I wouldn't bother buying any size 1 as if your baby is bigger you won't need any of those at all!

I have a box of 92 size 3s because they were on offer in the supermarket last time they were there, and will get one smaller pack of size 2s before the birth but no more until I know how big the baby is - my first was 9lb so could have started with size 3 - my 2nd was about 8lb 6 but still only needed size 2 for a few weeks.

I think 8 or 9 nappies a day is about right for a newborn - they do get through fewer per day when they are older babies!

I think it also depends on the brand as I cant remember which way arounf it is but either Huggies or Pampers go up to a heigher weight in size 1

cowboylover · 06/03/2011 18:06

Sorry for the spelling, I should read before I post!

trixie123 · 06/03/2011 20:54

I wouldn't buy hundreds unless you live miles from shops. Just get a couple of packs and send DP or whoever out to get them as you need them.

BertieBotts · 06/03/2011 20:57

Supermarkets usually take packets of nappies back without a receipt if they are unopened - in case you stocked up and your baby outgrows them before you get through the stash!

Bear in mind as well that the different brands suit different-shaped babies (to do with how chubby their thighs and bum are) and you can't predict which will fit yours in advance.

nomoreheels · 07/03/2011 10:20

I have my two free packs of size one nappies that I got through the parent club offer at Asda and with the Tesco voucher in the Tommy guide book. I don't plan to buy anymore just in case baby is bigger.

I have one pack of size 2 that I bought as part of the Boots parenting club offer, where you get the free changing bag/mat.

So - I'll take a mix of both in my hospital bag.

Bubs not due til 3 June so don't want to go mad on nappy buying until I know what size she'll need. Lucky for us, there's a Lidl next to the hospital I'm giving birth at so DH can pop out for more if we need them. (MNetters have been bigging up Lidl nappies as good quality!)

Crawling · 07/03/2011 10:26

I bought one size one pack which went between two DC. Just get one newborn pack.

pirateparty · 07/03/2011 10:34

Goodness - I hardly bought any compared to most others here - maybe a packet of the first two sizes?

I agree with BertieBoots that different nappies suit different babies. If I'd bought lots of the one particular type which leaked every time we used them I'd have been in trouble!

But yes, I'd say you get through about 8/9 a day with a newborn. I'd buy a packet of newborn and then next size up - it's not impossible to get nappies delivered or send your dh out (or even go out yourself!)

That's what I'm planning to go this time.

catwhiskers10 · 07/03/2011 10:37

My DD went through about 8 a day as a newborn but I wouldn't buy too many as she went up 2 sizes in a short space of time.
They are always on offer somewhere so don't be tempted to stock up as they may get outgrown and go to waste.

humanfraggle · 07/03/2011 12:10

nomoreheels LIDL nappies are fabulous, however all the LIDLs near us only stock size 3 and upwards. My DD only went into size 3 at roughly 6 months!

I agree too with BertieBoots, different nappies suit different babies - and also different size nappies in different brands suit the same baby!!

Every time we have changed size nappy we have had to change brand due to leakage Hmm

I noticed a little graph on a pack of LIDL nappies Grin the other day, it says that if the baby is taller and thinner, they tend to be okay in the smaller size for longer? That makes sense to me as my DD is long but thin - she's just turned 1 (and weighs just over 9kg) and is only just fitting into a size 4 without leakage due to being too big!
