Anyone had sugar in their urine and not had GD?

There was sugar in my sample at my 34 week appointment yesterday so just a bit concerned whether this means I may have developed GD? My mw isn't taking any action at the moment as she's going to see what it's like at my next appointment. I'm planning on a homebirth so obviously GD might throw a spanner in the works there :( but just wondered whether it's necessarily anything to worry about?

Nothing to worry about if it's just once - I seem get sugar in my urine if I have had cornflakes and/ or fruit such as a pear for breakfast, as there is more sugar in them than you think (it has happened at some point in all 3 of my pregs, though I was only sent for a GD test in the first, which came back negative). With this one and last one the doctor (doctor led care where we live anyway) instructed me to cut sugary food out of my diet (she even listed any sugary fruits such as pears and bananas as to be avoided) - meaning all day every day, but now I have unsweetened porridge and no fruit juice for breakfast on the day of my apts and carry on as before otherwise have never had sugar in my urine since!

I don't know if this is fudging the results but it works for me and my 2nd baby was a normal weight - 8lb 6 I think (3680 grammes, whatever that is in lb), and looked almost slim as he was 54cm long, my first was 9lb 1oz but had had the negative GD test...

Well I'd just had a banana/full fat yoghurt shortly before doing my sample so fingers crossed that's why it was raised. I'm also measuring 'a good centimetre' ahead on fundal height but I have been since I was first measured at 25 weeks and I didn't have sugar in my urine then. It's not getting any bigger so baby seems to be growing at the right rate just a bit ahead of itself. She says she might send me for a growth scan after next appointment but I think perhaps she's being cautious because of the planned homebirth?

Good to know that it's not always doom and gloom anyway! Thanks 2and1

I had persistent sugar in my urine with dc3. I swear the doctor thought I was having a sneaky mars bar before each appointment. No gd and my blood sugar was always fine.

I guess some women just secrete sugar for no reason its called glucosuria or something. They induced me on my due date because of it.

Yup I had too and it showed up just before a trip to Disneyland Paris, so I couldn't properly enjoy the massive selection of delicious cakes that came in the buffet dinner as I was convinced I would have gd, then only had a little bit once or twice after but nothing to worry about.

Hope it's all fine for you.

I had this I had some breakfast cereal and it came up +2 glucose! They booked me in for the next day for a GTT. This came back normal no problems. It does go to show how much sugar is in some stuff!! Dont worry too much I posted something similar on here a while ago and other people said they had sugar before they went.
I try and do the sample at home now before I eat to avoid the glucose coming up again. If your appt is in the afternoon make sure you have a sample bottle with powder called boric acid (they are the red top bottles) in the bottom this prevents any overgrowth of bacteria should your sample need to go off for culture as well. Hope this helps?!

I had this after scoffing an entire bag of jelly babies on the way to the MW appointment when I had forgotton to do a sample - when I got there I did a sample then and when they tested it they sent me for the one hour GTT Blush

All fine though.

Ah, lots of reassuring stories - thanks

Fingers crossed it'll be back to normal by my 36 week appointment!

Yup at 34 weeks. I'd had a fruit salad. Grin

I just noticed on my mat notes for my last apt that I had urine glucose '+' and it wasnt mentioned to me at all. I have fruit every morning followed by a square of plain chockie (hey I'm pg and if I want it I will have it! Grin. I assume from all your comments that those might be the culprits so thanks for helping me not to panic x

lucielooo · 02/03/2011 17:07

sounds like it jasmine!

On the plus side it's given me a kick up the bum to get back to eating super healthily and knock the sticky toffee pudding on the head (:() Which is sort of a shame but probably good for both of us in the end!

Maybe she mentioned it because it's in conjunction with bump measuring slightly bigger

i took a water sample in last week and it showed there was some glucose. (didnt help that i'd had a bag full of jellybabies the night before!). took another sample in 2 days later and it was clear. due to have GTT check at hospital in 2 weeks so one way or another i'll know for sure.

Glucose in urine is a weak indicator for GD. If you want to improve your sugar control though there's a thread here with lots of advice.

The fruit = fructose = glucose so that will have raised your blood sugar. The fat in the yoghurt will actually have slowed absorption unless it was full of added sugar.

If you want more diet help, even though you don't have GD, feel free to post on the thread.

lucielooo · 03/03/2011 09:41

Thanks happycamel that's really useful. I've been looking on the net for tips on what to eat and what to avoid just to be on the safe side as it really can't do anything but help

Thanks :)
