Movement at dating scan

chinateacup · 02/03/2011 12:28

I just had my dating scan and my little one barely moved. I had to get up and wiggle my hips like mad to make the little thing move at all, and then s/he just went back to sleep.
I'm guessing this is ok as the ultrasonographer seemed unconcerned, but most other threads on MN say their LO was jumping around ... am I worrying unduly?

On my first scan my baby barely moved and I got worried, but on my latest one it wouldn't stop moving! If the proffessionals didn't seem concerned then it should be fine!

sh77 · 02/03/2011 12:50

I have had 7 scans and baby never moved though he is v active at other times!

Charleigh0 · 02/03/2011 12:52

Oh I see, maybe he is just being awkward then! Smile

nunnie · 02/03/2011 12:54

Mine are less active at dating scan, but tend to wirggle more at 20 week scan.

emmah194 · 02/03/2011 13:31

Mine was active at first during the dating scan, then settled down. The same happened at my 20 week scan -jumping around like mad for most of the time, then decided to curl up for a wee nap just when they wanted to check the heart function so I had to go for a walk to wake baby back up again.

nannyl · 02/03/2011 13:35

mine kept doing twists and flips like an acrobat!

he / she just wouldnt stay still!

perhaps yours was sleeping? assuming they sleep?

FluffyDonkey · 02/03/2011 13:36

Ok I am soooo in over my head - when you say first scan you mean 12 weeks right?

They move at 12 weeks!!! ??? Shock

I thought they only measured a couple of cm?

Tamashii · 02/03/2011 14:04

Hi from October Fluffy

Yup! They look like a tiny little person at 12 weeks and when I had my 12 week scan (at 14 weeks tho) with DS he was touching his face and rolling around like he was trying to get comfy. I laughed with relief when the sonographer showed us the screen and said he was "waving" at us and he was bounced around all over the place by my laughing. Felt a bit guilty and had to try to do breathing to stop myself from laughing the rest of the way through the scan (I laugh uncontrollably when I am really nervous Blush )

Tamashii · 02/03/2011 14:08

Oh, I found this link where there's a clip of movement at 10 weeks
www.i-am-pregnant.com/pregnancy/calendar/week/10
There should be a pic of the scan at this stage then a clip beside it (not sure how real it is but it looks the part).

Anyway, IME first scan with DS at 14 weeks involved very little movement from him apart from him moving his arms around and turning round slightly.

humanfraggle · 02/03/2011 14:10

both of mine have been ridiculously bouncy during the first scan

At my 20 week scan with my DD, she was curled up in a tight little ball and the awkward little bugger would not budge for love nor money. The sonographer even had me skipping in the car park to see if I could 'wake her up' (that was fun with a full bladder!). She got a great look at her spine, but in the end I had to go back the following week for another scan as she couldnt' do all the checks!

Currently 15 weeks with my 2nd so looking forward to the 20 week scan!

chinateacup · 02/03/2011 14:41

Thanks everyone, I guess (as I thought) there are a variety of experiences and I was being overly/unduly worried x

lol i had mine today and baby hardly moved and when it did it had one quick burst of energy and then stopped. I think it is either lazy, like daddy, or stubborn, like me. when the baby did move it seemed to be bouncing up and down like it was on a trampoline. that entertained me a lot. It made measuring fun and scan was 20 minutes and even going to the toilet never worked.

catfishes · 02/03/2011 15:04

Thanks for posting this chinateacup, I had my 12 weeks scan last week and was secretly worrying about this too! Now I feel reassured too

FluffyDonkey · 02/03/2011 15:07

Wow - DH will be pysched when I tell him! (he's been disappointed ever since I told him we wouldn't know if it's a boy or girl at the first scan)

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 02/03/2011 15:28

You might, Fluffy! They offered to tell us at 1st scan, which makes me think it's a boy...

Mine never moves on scans and I've at 8 by 33 weeks. I actually had to pump my hips up and down to get it to take off so they could get a NT measurement. Then I had 2 20 week scans because it wouldn't turn to show its face.

Hersetta · 02/03/2011 16:14

Not necessarily Snap. I had my 12 weeks scan at the fetal Medicine Centre and they asked at the end of the scan if we wanted to know the gender. he said he was pretty convinced it was a girl. They also correctly told my friend at her 12 week scan that she was expecting a boy.

I have my 20 week scan in 2 weeks so we shall see if they are correct. I think this is pretty rare though and most sonograpohers won't offer an opinion at 12 weeks as they can be wrong too often. Pretty easy to tell though at 20 weeks - i even said to the soonograpger at my 20 weeks scan with DD 'It's a girl' and she said it certainly is.

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 02/03/2011 16:20

Oooh that puts the surprise back on the cards Grin

Gender prediction is never 100% accurate though so there's always an element of wait-and-see. One of my friends was told all the way through it was a boy...out popped a girl!

FluffyDonkey · 02/03/2011 16:24

I won't tell DH we might be able to just in case Wink

But that would be so cool Grin

Am having my first non-vomiting day in 3 weeks and I'm actually feeling positive about this pregnancy for once! That and the fact that in 3 weeks time I get to see the baby!!!

highheelsandequations · 02/03/2011 16:40

mine refused to move at 12 week scan, was very disappointed, made sure I had sugary stuff before 20 week scan to try and get a wriggle :o

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 02/03/2011 16:44

Which maternité did you decide in the end, fluffy? 50 others Shock mine is tiny in comparison (am hoping I don't get sent to the horrible clinic down the road because they're full on the day).

FluffyDonkey · 03/03/2011 08:54

Snap Franco-Britannique in Levallois - it's the most highly recommended by my gyneco + it's actually the nearest to where we live + it's on a direct metro line from my work so practical all round!

I think the 50 women were all at different stages - some already had bumps visable under winter coats. A lot seemed very shocked that there were so many of us!

The most funny was the guy who was registering his wife (he seemed very ill at ease) plus the old lady (think 80+) whom everyone assumed was in the wrong room (turned out she was registering her daughter)
