Thrush for what feels like most of my pregnancy so far

I'm 29 weeks and feel as though I've had thrush for most of my pregnancy so far. Have had 3 Canestan pessaries so far and used the cream throughout. It appears to disappear for a week or so before coming back with a vengeance! I've had a swab so I know it's definitely thrush. My poor dp is being very understanding but sex has been off the menu for the majority of my pregnancy too. I'm now starting to worry I'll have it when I give birth and wondering how it will affect the baby. Any advice please??

I was just like you. from about 24 weeks i had thrush that lasted until i was 32 weeks. I tried everything my doctor could give me, nothing helped, some made it worse. I then got some advice from a friend, olive oil. sounds so so strange but olive oil is naturally ant-fungal and its not medicine so you can use it as much as you want. I just put a bit on a cotton ball and put it on where it hurt every time i went to the toilet. after about a week my thrush was gone and anytime i start to feel a bit sore i put it on again for a few days and it clears things up. its very cooling and soothing too. I know its weird but im sure like me youll be desperate to try anything at this point. hope it helps

No advice from me, just solidarity... me too!!

Another thrush-infested one here. It's miserable. You have my sympathy.

bobblehat · 01/03/2011 10:04

I had this when I was pregnant too. Mine cleared up by itself when I was about 35 weeks.

Not nice, but I've not had it since (ds now 9yo) and didn't have it at all with ds2.

I had this throughout my pregnancy with all four of mine. It cleared up on its own when I had the baby and none of the babies were affected in any way. Its really miserable I know, but it will go eventually and seem like such a distant memory.

It may or may not help but the best advice I ever heard about recurring thrush was related to the fact that the bacteria are SOOOOO hard to kill!

I was told (honestly!) to iron my knicker gussets!

I LOL'd at first but it was a midwife colleague of mine who basically explained that the candida are resistant to normal wash temperatures! Shock.

So you can wash undies that you have worn during an episode but the litte blighters are still lingering ready to irritate you again. I suffer with it a fair bit (despite being impeccably clean!) so was willing to try anything. Just washed all my bloomers Wink and sat ironing the gussets on the highest setting til they were steaming. DH found it highly funny that I was verbally attacking the candida as well "take that you little s**ts"!! Grin.

It may not completely eradicate thrush as pg means you're more likely to get it, but it certainly helped me. Smile

cloiuseg I love your post - laughed out loud and got some strange looks at work. Will def try it as I too am a sufferer.

preggos will also try the olive oil - can it be the normal one you buy to cook with?

clouiseg · 01/03/2011 14:46

Wink good luck!!

paddypoopants · 01/03/2011 14:50

Can you get a different treatment rather than the canesten. I had terrible thrush when pg but I am sensitive to the antifungal in canesten pessaries so the gp gave me a prescription for another sort which cleared it up after 2 treatments - it was great.

dribbleface · 01/03/2011 15:43

once it has gone (abeit briefly) i can recommend bio-fem active gel-can get it in boots. Its natural, safe in pregnancy (well it was 2 years ago but check). You can use it as a preventative. Worked a treat for me.

KnitterNotTwitter · 01/03/2011 15:49

the trouble with anti-fungals is that when you wiped the buggers out you wipe out everything... I had lots of success with biocidin forte tablets.

It's basically a grapefruit seed extract that slightly changes the pH of your body and so makes the environment less attractive to fungus...

they also do liquid format which you can dilute and just use as a wash for the relevant parts of you!

delilahbelle · 01/03/2011 15:53

Low iron levels can cause thrush.. I have suffered in the past (am not preg) but since having a blood count and being prescribed ferrous sulphate have not had it since. Touch wood...

MrsWajs · 05/03/2011 02:29

I am soo off to iron my knickers!!!

I'm also suffering with chronic thrush just now (33weeks pg) I'm a regular sufferer when not pregnant, usually about once a month pre-period and it absolutely is the bain of my life!!!

Can't offer anymore advice than is offered here already, really just looking for solutions I may not have tried yet. Can you take the biocidin forte tablets when pregnant do you know knitternottwitter

ThisIsYourSong · 05/03/2011 05:55

Another one here too, and its such a pain. I've been taking acidophilus tablets which are supposed to help. Also my pharmacist said avoid too much sugary food (um, ok Hmm) as it creates a good environment for the thrush to thrive.

Good luck in getting rid of it.

preggos · 05/03/2011 06:06

yeah normal olive oil you would use for anything is just what you need, good luck

oggybags · 05/03/2011 08:30

Me too: no advice just sympathy lol

prettywhiteguitar · 05/03/2011 08:48

I have ironed my gussets and am now waiting to see the results !!!

Now going to crack open the olive oil...

(getting desperate)
