Changing mat and liners??

Im going to be buying a changing mat from John lewis which comes with a liner (mini kind of towel that sits in the middle mat).
They also sell an additional pack of 3 liners.
Do you think i would need tp purchase the additional pack or will the one with the mat be sufficient?

I think you would be mad to buy a liner at all. Your newborn baby will wee on the mat / liner at every nappy change and you will change his / her nappy 6 times a day. You need plastic, which you can wipe clean, and then wipe clean again, and then wipe clean some more. You will have more than enough washing to deal with - really you don't need to add to the pile with liners.

Why on earth would you want a towel on a changing mat???? Just something else to be washing ten times a day! I have seen them and always wondered who buys them - it's you! Get yourself a plastic one which you can wipe down. JL do a great one called a wedge with raised sides which I found really useful, it's very secure for when they start to try to roll over.

I had something like this from mothercare too but like the other people said tbh it ends up in the washing basket most of the time rather than in use, so don't really need to bother with it but if you really want to have a towel there all the time then yes get the other pack because otherwise itll spend most its time in the wash and wont have anything on your mat, but really its fine without or you can put a muslin on the mat if you want.
I just thought originially that oh my baby will be too cold on the plastic mat without a towel there! so had to buy it but really he did not care whether it was on there or not

i bought a pack of oldfashioned terry towelling square nappies when dc1 was born. folded over, used it to protect him form the cold plastic. there were a dozen in the pack, and they were used for all three children.

washed and sterilised they were then used as towels for drying my hands, general kitchen use for years afterwards. (dc1 is now a teenager) however i havent seen any for a ocuple of years, so they have obviously finally died out. :)

id definitely get an extra pack.

you will get poo / wee / sick on them quite regularly, sometimes several times a day!

i like some form of material / towelling on a plastic changing mat too...

Parents have one on the mat they bought for their house. Velcro at the top so it meant that the bottom of the towel kept getting caught up in DD's vest/sleep suit when I was changing her. A real PITA! If you feel the need for something other than plastic against your baby when you change then just use an old towel.

Use muslin squares instead...

I just use normal towels on top of the changing mat. I don't want to put baby directly on the cold plastic and towels are washed frequently anyway.

I saw the one in John Lewis that you are on about when pregnant with DC2 (now 15 months nearly) and thought it was not too bad an idea, but in the end went for a plastic one for the above reasons. IMO it is better to buy the additional bits if you do get it, because for DS I bought a fabby big wedge-shaped one (would recommend as it saw him through until age 3). It fitted with a separately purchased cover that was terry towelling and covered the entire thing. However, every time I put the towelling cover back on, I swear, DS would always pee/vomit/poo all over it at the next nappy change Grin. It was never on there for more than one or two changes and then back in the wash it had to go Hmm. It would be better to buy a pack of about 12 large muslins or value cotton towels and leave them folded next to the nappy changing area in a neat pile, so that you could use them and then put them in the wash if needed.

Don't bother with the JL one, the liners shrink and then don't popper onto the mat properly anymore. In any case it's a rubbish idea for all the above reasons. Use a muslin, or keep the changing mat propped against the radiator between uses.

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 28/02/2011 10:57

It will depend on your baby - I just used a handtowel or muslin on top of plastic changing mat.

Apart from a few very explosive poos, neither the hand towel or changing mat was soiled when changing nappies. After a few weeks I pretty much gave up on the changing mat altogether and just used a towel to change DD on where ever we were.

theyCallMeHer · 28/02/2011 11:06

Ah yes I used muslins on top of the changing mat too.

ThisFeelsWeird · 28/02/2011 11:14

Oh yes, I forgot to say that I did use muslins for under his head and back so he didn't get cold - but never the bottom area!
