was just wondering is it safe to have a bath whilst pg. I am fed up having showers and would love to relax for half hour in a warm bath. Confused

I bloody well hope so as I don't have a shower in my house Grin. I think the idea is not to overheat so a warm bath is fine but a hot one is a no-no.

justbeingmummy · 27/02/2011 21:42

Ive been having a bath all the way through this and my last pg! (we dont have a shower).

Ive always been told its fine aslong as you dont have the water really hot, to be honest I couldnt live without my baths its the only time im comfy and relaxed :)

Portofino · 27/02/2011 21:44

We never had a shower when I was PG. I had no idea that baths were frowned upon. I just had one as normal every morning.

cece123 · 27/02/2011 21:47

thanks guys, a few people told me not to take one but after these comments i am going to enjoy a long one. Pity i won't have a glass ofWine with me.

Noone had a shower til relatively recently. This is just one of those "extra" things to worry about that never existed before....

trixie123 · 27/02/2011 22:17

absolute bollocks, I am continually amazed by the number of people on here who have been told the most ludicrous things about what you can and can't do in pregnancy. I spent half my time when pregnant with DS in the bath and only don't so much now because he wants to get in and share it. Go ahead, soak, wallow, enjoy the quiet!

Leilababyno1 · 27/02/2011 22:35

It does make me smile, when I read posts like this.

A BATH??!!- of course you can have one!!!

Confused
cece123 · 27/02/2011 22:40

the reason i was asking this question is because i have had two m/c before this pregnancy and was told it could harm baby in first few months.

A bath will be fine... just dont boil yourself...

humanfraggle · 28/02/2011 12:02

I asked my doctor about this - because of all the bullshit horror stories heard about not having baths - in my first pregnancy as I had terrible back-ache, she told me to soak in a nice warm bath. She said that the potential 'danger' is your blood pressure rising if it's too hot & possibly making you feel faint - but she added that you wouldn't be able to stand the water being that hot anyway.

I know of someone who refused to have a bath while she was pregnant - and instead washed her hair over the sink and had a strip wash every day Hmm

enjoy your lovely long soak - especially now while you can!

cremeeggsrock · 28/02/2011 12:10

do what i did! wine glass and shloer Grin

enjoy!

ethelina · 28/02/2011 12:14

I had a hot bath every day while I was pregnant. No ill-effects here. Smile

I think the heat thing is to do with prolonged exposure to steamy heat like in a sauna. I like my baths really quite hot but have never reached sauna conditions in my bathroom.

If you're nervous, have the hot bath but limit yourself to 10 or 15 minutes.

Oh, and second the shloer or small glass of wine twice a week

growing3rdbump · 28/02/2011 12:30

I had a lovely warm/hot bath yesterday. When I started to feel a little too warm I just added some cold water and enjoyed the relaxing time away from the other two children!!!
I was having a daily bath towards the end of first pregnancy due to a really achy back and it's always been fine!

iwilldothis · 28/02/2011 12:57

I almost LIVE in the bath when I'm pg,it's the only place I'm comfortable with terrible PGP! Enjoy!

cremeeggsrock · 28/02/2011 13:01

the other thing to note! make sure DH or significant other is near by incase you get stuck Grin the practicalities of a roll top bath!

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 28/02/2011 13:05

I got stuck in the bath the other day, had slipped down and somehow couldn't hoik myself back up as our bath is quite deep. Thank heaven DH was there to come and heave me up again.

happycamel · 28/02/2011 17:07

Baths are absolutely fine, as everyone says. If you have a temperature in the first trimester there is an increased risk (still tiny) of miscarriage, this is normally because someone is ill but there's a very small chance of raising your core body temperature if you have an excessively hot bath so that's why there's some talk of risk.

TBH I think it's water births that have caused the confusion. Because the baby is born into the water it has to be at blood temperature - 37 degrees. I've read people on here saying all baths throughout pregnancy mustn't exceed that temperature and that is just wrong.

cece123 · 28/02/2011 22:33

thanks everyone for the advice Smile

I asked my midwife and she says it's fine ... which is good as I have one almost every day!
