Hi there
I'm now 19 + 2 with my first pregnancy and have just recently started to wake up with really bad pain in each side around the top of the leg/hip area.

As soon as I get up and walk around the pain eases and disappears, but is excruciating when I wake up.

Is this normal? Should I be worried? Is there something I should be doing? I've got a pregnancy pillow, but not sure if that's making it worse, as obviously have to sleep on my side....

Any help, advice or suggestions of getting it to go away would be much appreciated.

Thank you. Smile

Just to reassure you, I think it is completely normal and I'm sure there'll be lots of others along soon saying the same. It's (apparently) to do with your bump as it grows out in front and pulls on ligaments and tendons etc. in your hips. I am sending you a ton of sympathy as it is excruciating isn't it! I suffered really badly with my first 2 pregnancies and am just waiting for it to start again now I'm up the duff with #3...

I found it helpful to put a pillow between my knees so that my hips were kept more in line, but it still woke me up several times a night and I had to keep changing sides. Hope you find something that helps soon :)

binky ask your MW to refer you to a physio who can show you some strengthening exercises. I was waking up in tears because of the pain but the exercises have really helped - I'm hoping they are keeping everything 'pert' too but dont think theres much hope of that! The other thing you could try is to put a pillow in front of you and one wedged behind you to stop your hips twisting - its takes a bit of getting used to but it does seem to make a difference.

Hi Lilly, Nicklenackle and Jasmine, thank you all so much for your advice and reassurance. With it being my first, you never know when it's something to worry about or just something completely normal.
So I really appreciate all of your comments. Will definitely try the pillow and those exercises, and if it still persists will go and see a physio.

Thank you again. Smile

Im 37 weeks with my first and have been suffering really badly with my hips since early on too. not nice at all! Ended up going to see a physio, which resulted in crutches etc....but she did give me some really good tips that seem to be working quite well. One of the best things to do ive found is ( as suggested) put a pillow behind you aswell as one between your knees, really does stop u twisting about so much, and after a few nights of this, you should really start to feel a difference. Also, if you can get someone to give u a massage around the each hip and down your leg whilst your lying on your side, it can ease the pain that little bit. Also, when you turn over in bed, try to keep your legs together, the same as when your sitting down....hope some of this helps cos its miserable! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy :)

wait wait wait! before you embark on yoga and other exercise please rule out anything more serious than "normal aches and pains"

My SPD started off as a pain in one hip, then slowly moved around my Si joint to my pubic bone. I'd see your GP and ask to be referred to a pregnancy physio. Around the 20 week mark is most common for these aches to arise as it is when your body begins to release Relaxin- a hormone to loosen your pelvic area in prep for baby carrying and birth- and this in turn can make your hips/pelvis fall slightly out of line.

I was told to stay well away from yoga and any exercise which involved parting the legs Shock and slowly from 20 to 30 weeks my condition improved immeasurably, with careful management and osteopathy.

Good luck!

coral you've worried me now, my physio told me to keep doing the yoga and walking to keep my joints mobile - I'm going to check now!
