it is the only thing which touches my migraines. They become much worse and more frequent up to every other day when pg.

however just taken some couple hours ago and feel more sick than every very very woozy and legs feel dead itms? just totally out of it really. Luckily Ds's all in bed and dh here, otherwise i'd feel panicky tbh.

I worry if i feel like this what is effect on baby?

Im 19+5.

I was prescribed it for a cyst when I was about 5 weeks and told it would be ok but not to take it after 27 weeks (that was 4 years ago now though). It didn't have the same affect on me as you though, Is it possible to get an appointment with your GP to see if there is anything else they can give you if it's making you feel rough.

Ohhh hello and congratulations by the way :)

I do for IBS, and have done from the beginning. You need to stop taking it about a month before birth tho my gp told me, as it can make baby drowsy. Its ok while baby is still in you, its when they come out. And you can't use it if you want to BF after, as it turns to morphine in the baby apparantly :(

I was categorically told no to being prescribed codeine in pregnancy by my doctor, when I had an excruciating gum infection.Confused

I took it a couple of times in the second trimester for migraines. I took the lowest dose (half a Cocodamol, followed by another half an hour or so later). The pharmacist said it was fine, and my pregnancy has not been affected. Having said that, I would be cautious about it now that I'm getting close to the actual birth.

PS. Just re-read your message. Every other day is terrible - you poor thing, you're really suffering!! I hope you can have a good chat with your doctor to see if there are other ways to minimise your migraines. Good luck!!

Maybe depends on gp, but I have a different one to the one I had last time and they both said it was ok as long as I stopped about 36 weeks. But I only take the minimum. Makes the difference to me between being able to eat something and not being able to eat so much as a biscuit if I am going out. Although I am on such a low dose, I can't eat much more than a biscuit anyway.. I know she looked it up when I first fell pregnant as I was taking other meds for IBS at the time, which had to stop.

Thanks think will go back to gp but they aren't very helpful just expect you to get on with it which is a bit tricky with 3 dc when you can't lift head from pillow

I had it when I was recovering from my abdominal stitch at 13 weeks.

Made me feel very woozy as well, including double vision. Worst of all, it would give the effect of low blood sugar after a while - really shaky and yucky, but without the hunger pangs.

And it makes constipation worse..

Having said that, it is preferable to migraines! I get the odd one in pregnancy and fortunately ibuprofen (second trimester only) helped.. I'm now in the third trimester when ibuprofen is not a good idea, and dreading getting one again.

So sorry you're left with little choice :-(

Sorry to hear you're having migraines, I had the same - one at least every other day - up until about 18 weeks then mercifully they tailed off for me. I took paracetamol and codeine a couple of times but remember feeling quite anxious about it as different people told me different things about whether or not it was OK to take - GP suggested it as a replacement for the triptans I used to take for migraine pre-pregnancy, but then my midwife was horrified when I told her I'd taken it, and I lost confidence and stuck to paracetamol after that. Paracetamol as a remedy for migraine is a joke, I know, but a couple of things made it take the edge off a bit more for me - using the soluble stuff right at the start of an attack, or taking it with caffeine (paracetamol plus can of coke or a coffee) if you're not avoiding caffeine completely. The times I did take codeine, I think it did make me feel more sick combined with the migraine nausea/morning sickness I already had, and most times I just threw them straight back up. You have my every sympathy, I can remember just how awful and draining the migraines were and it's hard when everyone thinks you're making a fuss about 'a bit of a headache'.

nicolamumof3 · 25/02/2011 21:53

thanks diy, i also take the painkillers with a diet coke!! I don't know what to do for the best. at least after taking the codeine i can at least get up, even if i can barely function im at least out of bed with the kids. Im 20w tomorrow no sign of them abating this is the worst i've had in my pg's.

I have never been able to find anything conclusive on this. However I am currently on a labour ward being induced and I am being given 60mg of codeine every 6 hours plus paracetamol. So that is 240mg of codeine per day and I am (hopefully!) going to give birth very soon. Considering that an over the counter one would have about 8mg per tablet and they are giving me (and everyone else on my ward) a lot more than this, suggests it is quite safe?
