What do you wear to go swimming?

This might be a stupid question but I'm 24 weeks pregnant and am thinking about taking up swimming as nice gentle excercise as everything just seems to wear me out. I used to walk LOADS and barely do anymore as I just get SO tired. Don't really feel safe cycling anymore and I live in a hilly city so it wouldn't exactly be gentle anyway!
Anyway, I was just wondering what you wear when you go swimming? Is there maternity swimwear? Bikinis would be the obvious solution but I can't imagine getting my belly out like that, it would seem a bit OTT!

Nurse Sunshine - everyone from the June thread has been wondering if you were ok as you haven't posted for ages. Good to see you are ok. Pop onto the thread and lest them all know :)

Tankinis! Easy access when you're bursting for a wee but still cover your bump. They'll probably be less of a cover up as time goes on however, but that'll depend how big your bump gets :) You can get them everywhere I think, mothercare etc.

Wigeon · 24/02/2011 18:15

Let me Google that for you Grin

And slightly more helpfully, I just got this nice polka dot maternity swimming costume from Next, here. I think you might have to be quite brave to wear a bikini to a municipal swimming pool! Smile

Wigeon · 24/02/2011 18:17

Actually, for my first pregancy, I did get away with a normal tankini, and my bump peeked out the bottom of the top half, but this time round my normal swimming costume is a regular one-piece and I don't fit in it any more!

BerryLellow · 24/02/2011 18:18

I had a speedo maternity cossie - nice and supportive :)

NurseSunshine · 24/02/2011 18:21

Cameli, this is the first day I've been back on MN, will pop in to Jue in June in a mo and say a sheepish Hi :)

Wigeon LOL I do that Google thing to people haha. That polka dot tankini is lovely though, might have to invest.

hi, i am 29 weeks and still fit into pre-pregnancy swimsuit (Zoggs size 10, it was a big big on me before). i think it cost around gbp20-25. it is very good as it has sterdy support panels on the front. i would recommend upsizing. i might get size 12 after 32 weeks or maybe this one will keep stretching Smile... my pre-preg size was 8... if you are a good swimmer, i would not recommend getting a maternity swim suit -- looks more like a something for lounging around

dazedandconfused · 24/02/2011 19:27

Bought a great black tankini from Mothercare today (I'm 26 weeks). I could still get into the old suit (just) but I didn't want to stretch it out of shape. This one's very comfy and covers all without being too frumpy - £26 which I thought was worth it to make swimming an even more enjoyable experience. It actually has drop cups for breastfeeding but not sure if I'll use it post pregnancy. Like you, I'm getting a bit weary on land but in the water, I feel positively sylph-like! It's bliss, until I have to haul myself out again at the end.

NurseSunshine · 24/02/2011 19:33

I'm not really a very good swimmer but any excercise is better than nothing and I thought the water would help take the weight off.

Lilly13 My pre-pg swimwear won't fit, apart from gigantic belly, I've gone up 2 cup sizes and have gone from an 8 to a 10 so I think it would struggle to contain me!!

I bought a £5 swimming cossie from Tesco and just intend to buy a new one every few months. I thought that would be cheaper than a 'proper' maternity tankini Smile

PipPipPip · 24/02/2011 20:15

I've been waddling mincing around my local swimming pool in a bikini. I sure get some looks but, hey, its all natural innit?

NurseSunshine · 24/02/2011 20:47

You're a braver woman than me pippippip Grin

I have a swimsuit from Formes that has seen me through two pregnancies already and is now serving me in my third. It was £80 but the best £80 I have spent. I swim most evenings or mornings.

clouiseg · 24/02/2011 22:47

Picked one up yesterday from the new maternity range at Matalan after my trusty next one stretched it's last stretch Sad.

Friend mentioned them to me as I hunted my local area to no avail for my evening swim...£12, nice halter neck & removable pads.

In my case I won't be needing one after May as it's Dc4 (& the last one!) so opted for cheap & cheerful. Still happy with it though. :-)

Underachieving · 24/02/2011 23:07

What do you wear to go swimming? a flourescent yellow pair of tights pulled round me neck

Ok oh, not really. I'm not a bloke.

The cheapest maternity cozzie I can find because I know I'll only ever wear it for about 6 swims in between the fits-in-normal-cozzie and the too-waddly-for-excercise stages and then I'll chuck it.

perpetuallypregnant · 25/02/2011 00:04

I got a polka dot tankini in the post Christmas sale at mother care.

It's really comfortable, might gave to go swimming more often actually, its blissful when you're feeling like a whale.

Tuis is the first time I've bought a specific maternity cozzie. The last 4 times I just wore a normal one - they stretch quite nicely.

BaggedandTagged · 25/02/2011 00:14

I just wear my normal bikini- out and proud Grin

crochetcircle · 25/02/2011 07:02

I wear my normal bikini too, I like my bump!

However, the boob situation does mean I'm looking quite 'full' and if they keep growing I'll need to get a new one!

jasmine51 · 25/02/2011 08:59

Hello Nurse! I got a nice one from Figleaves. Its a Zoggs one but there are others on there too. Such a relief to wear a proper maternity one!

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 25/02/2011 09:43

I have this one: www.claudiastrand.com/cat-1-subcat-88-product-777

the way the bottoms fold is really handy for the bump!

wolfcubEm83 · 25/02/2011 21:18

I am so glad you've asked this question, im 22 weeks and thinking of swimming too but dont know what to wear!! My bump has suddenly appeared from nowhere this week and i do astually look pregnant and not just fat so im going to be brave and wear a bikini - how exciting!! Grin

buttonmoon78 · 25/02/2011 23:53

I wore a bikini with #3 and I will do so with #4. At 14-16 normally with a belly like a deflated balloon the looks I get pg are no different from those I get not pg!

I chucked my dignity out a long time ago Grin

MrsVidic · 26/02/2011 10:08

I wore a bikini last time and will again, I love the bump

Wigeon · 26/02/2011 10:32

I love my bump too, and generally don't care about dignity Grin but I don't think mine is the most attractive thing in the world at 29 weeks - stretch marks and weird browny/yellowy skin over the tummy button area, not sure the swimming population of my town want to see it in all its glory! Grin

highheelsandequations · 26/02/2011 14:11

I would wear my bikinis but am more worried about bursting out of the cups than baring my belly! I tried one of them on at about 10 weeks and looked like I should be in a trashy lads mag. Bought a lovely bright pink tankini from ASOS, thought a lot of the other maternity ones were a little drab :) Have been trying to go swimming once a week in place of aerobics, took a while to get used to swimming as eexercise instead of just splashing about in the pool but now feels quite relaxing.
