Slightly o/t using dummies in steam steriliser

Always had a cold water one before, so sterilised dummies, rinsed in boiling water, put in holder and didn't give it another thought, but how does it work with steam ones?

On the instructions it says once you open the lid, things have to be used straight away or they become non sterile, so how do I get dummies ready for taking out/ hospital etc? Surely as soon as I take them out the steriliser they will be unsterile?

When mine was in special care the nurse used a teat stuffed with cotton wool to keep DD quiet, lol, didn't seem too worried about sterilising it.

I used a steam steriliser with DD and DS. I used to buy the dummies that came with a little cap, so I guess they may not have been completely sterile but at least I knew they were clean. Having said that, both DC were a few weeks old before they had dummies, they were both 'sucky' babies. Why would you need to take dummies to the hospital??? Also, really wouldn't have thought a teat stuffed with cotton wool is safe at all Shock

I started out super strict and got more relaxed as time went on, but if you want totally sterile dummies, then buy steriliser bags from boots. You put water in them, add the dummy, microwave them for a couple of minutes, empty the water out of a side whole and then you can pop the bag in your change bag ready for use later. You can also do the same sort of thing using a sterilser bottle from Mothercare. Just pop the dummy inside the bottle and leave it in there until needed.

If you are planning on breastfeeding though, I would try to avoid dummies completely for the first six weeks until your milk flow is well established.

Boots sell a dummy steriliser for a couple of quid. here
It holds two dummies and you microwave it for 90 seconds - it's the best thing I bought last time round. You can then just take the steriliser out with you.

missp2010 Normally I wouldn't but you didn't have my daughter and she needed them lol. As soon as she was born she screamed and didn't stop, had a bath after as you do, could hear this baby screaming, said to hubby oh the poor parents, went back to labour room and found it was mine Blush She then proceeded to drink, now bear in mind this was her first feed, a FULL bottle of milk and would have kept on had there been anymore. Mind, nothing changes there lol. In the end the only thing that would shut her up, was a dummy. So now I go prepared :) Wish it was so easy to shut her up now, only now its talking not crying...

I didn't know you could get bags they are defo worth a look, as is the dummy steriliser from boots thanks :)

Am planning on trying to BF, but haven't been able to in the past, plenty of milk but lack nipples to help baby latch on, and believe me I tried, so if I can't the not using them for a few weeks shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the advice :)
