Head Lice and 10 weeks pregnant

I cannot believe that in nearly 39 years after having two children that I have managed to catch headlice for the first ever time.

I am ten weeks pregnant with my third and so cant use any of the chemical preparations and am sat here with mayonnaise on my hair wrapped in cling film.

I discovered the problem after home colouring my hair this morning and then having a bath and finding about 7 dead adult lice floating on the surface of the water.

I have no idea where I have got them from apart from a visit to the hairdressers about two or three weeks ago.

Does anyone have any advice as to what I can do to get rid of the little blighters if the mayo doeant work - my kids think I smell like a sandwich and to be honest the smell of the mayo is not helping my morning sickness!

Baby shampoo, and a few drops tea tree oil..should help!

Minkyjj · 23/02/2011 16:10

Will give that a go when I rinse the mayo out.

Nitcomb, conditioner (you can get a nice chemical free one like Weleda, not extortionate!) repeat weekly until no further signs. Three treatments should do it but if you are having trouble, get a NitFree comb which is good at getting eggs off. And you need to check the whole family, again with conditioner and a white 'detector' comb, parting their hair into strips and combing from scalp to tip. It's easier for someone else to do you than to do yourself, btw!
I got headlice when I was pregnant and it was discovered at hairdressers! Blush

My nephew used to get them constantly at school and my sister tried everything but one thing that worked was to smother his head/hair in veseline then cover with shower cap for 24 hours then comb out! I know this may ot be very practical and it did take a lot of washes for the vaseline to come out properly but it did work. Then she put a few drops of tea tree oil in shampoo, conditioner, and spray in conditioner, she still uses this and combs his hair with fine tooth comb once a week and he hasnt had them in ages!
Hope this helps! it must be awful! :(

You can use Hedrin

thingumybob · 23/02/2011 18:38

Nitty Gritty comb and lots of conditioner. I don't like to use anything else as my DC have eczema but I did resort to Hedrin recently as combing alone wasn't cracking it. It usually does though.

heffalumpbump · 23/02/2011 19:27

I am 19 weeks pregnant and have had the joy of headlice twice during this pregnancy so far (primary school teacher). Have used Hedrin both times which cleared them away quickly. Hope that helps x

Minkyjj · 23/02/2011 20:17

Thanks guys - will give it a go. I have Hedrin here but didnt think I could use it. Smile

Loolah · 23/02/2011 20:20

as bold:thingumybob said, get a nitty gritty comb works wonders

Loolah · 23/02/2011 20:21

whoops, bold: didn't work

neolara · 23/02/2011 20:22

Nitty gritty comb and lots of conditioner.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 23/02/2011 20:22

Get the Nitty Gritty comb and just comb through with ordinary conditioner.

That has always worked much better than chemicals in this house.

Nitty Gritty metal comb and lots of conditioner works wonders, repeat it 3 times in a week on yourself & dcs-maybe get dp to do it to save your back!
Most headlice are immune to lotions anyway

Clarella · 28/08/2012 19:59

Mayonaise?! Never heard of that one!

Another primary school teacher here, caught twice before. You need to keep going with the conditioner and comb for the length of their life cycle, the combing gets the live ones out so no more breeding and then continues to comb out the newly hatched ones. I've also been told a hot hairdryer helps kill/maim/roast the live ones too but not sure if true. It's the eggs that are the issue unless you go down the chemical route, which I don't know about in preg. There's a complicated method of using olive oil but ties in with their life cycle and has to be repeated every few days to catch the blighters hatching and stop them mating.

According to wiki, the soonest newly hatched ones might mate is after about 8 days, and they can live for a month, laying up to 4 eggs a day. So its kind of keeping going with the eradication until you are sure they've gone.

All the best! Horrid beasts!

mummysmellsofsick · 28/08/2012 20:24

Combs and conditioner are the only thing that works anyway. As someone said most headlice are resistant to the chemicals anyway so why risk it when you're pregnant.

coffeeonaswing · 08/09/2012 07:36

combed out around 15 live lice from my DS hair last night night. then treated with lyclear. Sleepless night for me with phantom itchy head. But Ds hair seems clear this morn-Yeh!
Just wondered if any one had any idea how long they might have been in residence on DS's head, before discovery??
Do I have to treat everyone in house(6) and wash all beds?
