One twin gone

Hello, I was told at an early 6 wk scan (due to some slight spotting) that I was expecting twins and both were in separate sacs with heartbeats, We felt elated as we were first time parents.
Yesterday at my 12 week scan I had "mixed news" I was told I'd had a missed miscarriage with one twin at about 8wks 5day, the other twin was doing great with all measurements being fine and a strong heartbeat.
It was the strangest feeling ever as I was over the moon to see my little miracle on the screen, but she then asked if I'd like to see the twin that hadn't made it? To which I replied Yes, this was very upsetting but I needed to see it.
My worry now is I was then given an appointment for a 20wk scan! 2 months of not knowing if the other twin had absorbed:(
So I put my foot down for a 16wk scan, am I getting the right support?
My fear is now purely with my survivng twin.

I am so sorry for your loss. I don't know if this will be of any help but a great deal of pregnancies start as twin pregnancies - many people never realise because they don't have a scan until 12 weeks. I have heard that this is as many as one in three pregnancies. The reason for saying that is that those pregnancies then go on perfectly normally to term.

So whilst I definitely think you should ask for as much support as you feel that you need, I'm sure that everything will go well with the surviving twin.

Hi Dipper

So sorry to hear this and didn't want to read and not post. Most midwives I've met have been understanding that pregnancy after loss is a stressful and anxious time, so I think you are right to ask for more scans. Also, have you asked when they usually start using the doppler at midwife appts? You'll be able to hear the heartbeat which is reassuring. With our area it's from about 12 weeks but I think it depends.

My local midwife team let me go in every week if I'm worried - I text them and they see me right at the beginning or end of their appts. Could you arrange something similar?

So sorry for your loss but congratulations on your pregnancy too.

This happened with our DD1 at an early scan we were told it was twins then at 10 weeks we were told there was 1 healthy baby and the other twin hadn't progresses since 7ish weeks. at 12 weeks there was still a sac but smaller they said there was no need for any extra scans and at 20weeks we had our scan and DD1 was fine and growing normally and there was a tiny empty sac where her twin was. When she was born there was no visible evidence of her twin apart from a mark on the placenta where it (she) would have been attached. We can only guess from this that she was identical. DD1 knows no different and we were feeling so blessed to have 1 healthy child.
