I know its a non essential, but just wondered what the general consensus is on nappy wrappers please, and whether anyone can recommend the best one?

i haven't, because i used cloth, but it always struck me that emptying a huge container of manky nappies mustn't be very nice. i mean, i know they're wrapped and all... but still!

i don't know anyone who has one either although the vast majority of friends use disposables. just chuck em in the bin

smokinaces · 22/02/2011 19:16

Angelcare. I used cloth with DS1 but only had 19m gap so used disposibles with DS2. We got the angelcare system through a bounty voucher. Only used it for dirty nappies so the cartridges lasted ages (wet didnt smell) and it is completely smell proof.

in fact I now use it (without the cartridges) to store the used cat litter in until bin day as it keeps the smell in really well.

smokinaces · 22/02/2011 19:17

I hated anyone putting a dirty nappy in my kitchen bin - I have that binliner in the kitchen for a week and dirty nappies stink!

Guacamole · 22/02/2011 19:20

We use ours all the time... We have a tommee tippee one and it's very good and holds in all the smells!

justbeingmummy · 22/02/2011 19:30

I had a Tomme Tippe one and did use it with my DS1 and found it good (but bloody expensive for the cartridges) until I had to empty it! The bag that it gets contained in is supposedly 'scented' but when I opened the bin to empty it after a few days it smelt awful, plus the palava to twist it, cut the last one and re-load the cartridge. I leant it to a friend after and never bothered asking for it back.
I find cheapy nappy bags and putting it in the big bin much easier and less smelly and its what I will be doing with this lo when he arrives in a few weeks but our bin is emptied alot and we only have to bung it out the front door, if you had to take the the bin down 2 flights of stairs or something and or you only had to change your bin bag once a week it might be a good investment?
Hope that helps :)

I love my Angelcare one. Haven't noticed a smell from it at all (still only breastmilk poo though).

I wouldn't be without mine.

Firawla · 22/02/2011 19:57

i've found tommee tippee to be the best one, wouldn't be without it either. they just make things easier, seems more hygenic, no smell etc. i don't like people putting nappies in kitchen bin either and its hassle to go outside all the time to the outside bin. they are not expensive so definitely worth it imo

Natzer · 22/02/2011 20:04

Thank you all for your reports, glad to know not everyone hates them. I don't like the thought of putting them in the kitchen bin and our outside bin is about 150m from front door. I'm really not good with smells Blush and was hoping that my DH will empty it for me when needs be.

I like the look of the angelcare one, and even to put nappies that are already wrapped (cheap nappy sacks) in.

And it seems to be cheap as chips, so not much to lose.

Thanks again ladies xxx Grin

We had one but the cost of refills was extortionate!
We use the bin still but with a normal bin bag in. We use cheap nappy bags for dirty nappies and just chuck wet ones in. The smell isn't bad- no worse than with refill cartridge. I think it's down tithe heavy lid keeping the smells in.

smokinaces · 22/02/2011 20:23

Natzer, you used to get a money off voucher (something like £12.50 ) in your Bounty pack at hospital for the Angelcare system

missp2010 · 22/02/2011 20:27

We briefly had a tommee tippee one (had a free voucher I think). It was rubbish, didn't help with the smell at all. I really wouldn't recommend it. Would rather use cloth, then you can flush the dirty liners. If you're using disposables I don't think it would make any difference to just have a small separate bin and use nappy bags.

AKMD · 22/02/2011 20:29

I thought nappy bins were a gimmicky waste of money designed to lure parents into buying endless refills so we just had a normal lidded bin with cheap nappy bags, 300 for 89p from Tesco. That was fine up until 6 months when we started weaning DS. It smelt awful! No wonder he didn't sleep properly, poor baby. We got an Angelcare bin and the problem has gone. You can get mutlibuy deals in the internet for refill cartridges, which are definitely worth doing.

So, summary is don't bother with nappy bin until you start weaning.

hmmSleep · 22/02/2011 20:32

I had one with Dd1 as we lived in an upstairs flat but I did find it a bit smelly. Now we live in a house I have a small bin just outside the back door that I throw them into, then empty that into the big outside bin when it's full.

ethelina · 22/02/2011 20:32

Pack of 3 cartridge refills in Argos is about 12 quid, Boy is nearly 6 months old and we have ordered 2 refill packs since he was born. In total have used 5.5 cartridges so far, if thats any guide for you.

Obviously as the nappies get larger, the cartridges get used up quicker.

mousymouse · 22/02/2011 20:32

we just have a bucket with tight fitting lid + bin liner. does the job and doesn*t smell (as long as the lid is down).

EdwardorEricCantdecide · 22/02/2011 20:34

Angelcare one. You will get a money off voucher in you bounty pack in hospital. So wait till you've had the baby.

pirateparty · 22/02/2011 20:37

We have the tommee tippee one and I think it's brilliant. I could not be doing with putting nappies in the kitchen bin or going outside every time I change a nappy. Ds is 26 months old and still use it. Cartridges are expensive though.

Natzer · 22/02/2011 20:38

Ooh thanks for the tips on the vouchers in the bounty packs! Grin

Had the tomme tippee one. Biggest waste of money ever! Sure it trapped in the smell initially... til you emptied it out and then ho hum! What a stench! Also the cartridges are pretty pricey too. I'm just gonna get a tiny plastic bin from Wilkinsons this time round and empty it out each day.

Underachieving · 22/02/2011 20:49

They were all the rage when DD1 was born (now 11 years old). There was one at playgroup and it didn't smell at all. But I found a much better solution (until I put her in washables) which was to throw out the standard sized kitchen bin and replace with one small enough to be lined with carrier bags. Then put the wheelie bin right outside the kitchen door. Changing the bin bag twice a day was just as effective as the Angelcare thing and totally free. It isn't a chore to change a bin bag when it's only a little carrier bag and you're only opening the door and lobbing it into the bin either. Changing the proper sized kitchen bin I have now is a pain the the arse though. I might throw it out again come to think of it.

schmee · 22/02/2011 22:06

We used to call ours the "shit sausage machine." It was foul! Can you put a small bin outside your front door?

Panzee · 22/02/2011 22:12

I just put mine in the kitchen bin. But I do empty it every day, and my son has always been a one-a-day pooer too.

Teapot13 · 22/02/2011 22:24

You can also just flush the solids.

Mibby · 01/03/2011 14:42

We were bought one but Ive never used it. Think its Tommy Tippee. Free to good home if anyone wants it (just send me the postage)
