Taking prednisolone during pregnancy

Hi All, i have been feeling really rather unwell today and so got an appointment to see a GP. My asthma is playing up amongst other things and he wants me to take prednisolone for a week, maybe two @ 30mg a day.
i am really reluctant to do this as i don't want to harm the baby in any way by taking them and the fact that they make me feel so crap makes me wonder how they will make Bean feel. That said, i do hear the "other side" that it is better to try and deal with this now rather than wait for the asthma to reach "crisis" as the GP said. i feel torn and am thinking of giving it another 24-48 hours and see how i get on before i start taking them?
This is making me feel really teary Sad
I'm 22 + 3.
Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thanks x

I took prednisolone (as well as other medication) during my pregnancy. It made me better = healthy Mummy is important too you know! I know it's not scientific but my DD is absolutely perfect Grin (apart from whenever she hears the word "no" but that's nothing to do with any medication I took, sigh!!) Your doctor wouldn't be telling you to take them unless it was necessary. I know they make you feel awful but truly, if it makes you better, it will be worth it especially for when your little bean comes along.

ummm. I'm not a medic but I was on prednisolone before I got pregnant due to allergies and my Immunologist got me to stop them before we ttc. I don't know if he was just being cautious. Also my allergies have cleared up during pregnancy (which is common) so it may be that he thought I wouldn't need the steroids and was right.

I wouldn't expect them to prescribe you anything that could hurt the baby.

I have Crohn's disease, and when planning my current pregnancy was told by my consultant that if I became ill enough to need it then I could take prednisolone (luckily I haven't so far). Not a doctor, but my understanding is that it's definitely not associated with risks of any birth defects. There is a risk of the baby having steroid withdrawal symptoms when it's born if you've been on high doses near to delivery, I think, which can be serious, but provided the midwives and doctors are aware of the situation beforehand then this can be dealt with safely. Hopefully in your cases you may be able to resolve your problem with a short course and have it out of your system by then? Having said all of this, the damn things do give me such unpleasant side effects that I will feel similarly worried if I end up needing them.

Steroids including prednisolone are routinely prescribed, sometimes in very high doses, during pregnancy for women who have immunological issues and/or to avoid miscarriage. I myself was on dexamethasone, daily for 12 weeks to avoid mc. People die daily from poorly controlled asthma, and there's loads of experience of using steroids in pregnancy. Take them, and try not to worry.
