About to have a third miscarriage :-(

Have just got home from an early scan at 7 weeks which revealed a pregnancy but only a speck of a baby :-( So I am almost certainly heading for my third miscarriage, and the second since my DS (especially darling today) was born nearly 18m ago. My DH is making gentle noises about underlying problems and investigating but since I'm 40 and he's a bit older, I think this is probably just a reflection of being older parents and something we have to take on the chin. We don't have too much trouble getting pregnant but this will be the third time the baby has probably died at about 5 weeks and a MC has followed.

Any reassurance would be very welcome on this sad day.

Chestnut I am sorry to hear you are going through this, I went through a mmc last year and know how that feels.

What did the specialist/sonographer say, being so early on are they sure that something is wrong?

My thoughts are with you xx

sunface · 22/02/2011 11:50

Didn't want to read and run Chestnut but big hugs your way. i had an early MC last year. Take care of yourself xx

Tezbean · 22/02/2011 11:50

Hi Chestnut

So sorry to hear this. Are you absolutely sure of your dates? Have they offered you another scan in a week to check whether things have changed?

Fingers crossed for you
xx

Chestnut So sorry you are going through this. Please dont dismiss your losses as due to your age. I had 4 mc at 5/6 wk stage and delayed my investigations because I thought the same thing. In the end I went for testing (privately was my preference as once I'd decided to go ahead I wanted investigations quickly). It showed up a blood issue that I didnt have previously and one that was very very treatable. All age related issues...quality and quantity of eggs, hormones etc were very healthy. Fingers crossed I am now 24 wks and going strong. I am 43 by the way. Please be assured that your age might not be the relevant factor here. All the best xx

So sorry you are going through this.

I agree with jasmine, testing will help you feel less helpless as well as hopefully giving you answers. Although unfortunately some trusts won't test until you've has 3 miscarriages in a row.

I had 4 losses between 5 and 8 weeks after my 2 DS and had tests that all came back negative. I'm now 25 weeks and all is well (I am taking aspirin, which was OKed by consultant, although I have no idea if that is the reason that this pregnancy is ok)

I totally recommend Prof Lesley Regan's book on miscarriage, it tells you all about the tests and is really reassuring.

Hope you're being looked after, and don't give up hope. x x

Chestnut Im 23 and have already suffered 2 x early MC. this is my 4th pregnancy as have one DD already and had no end of problems and scares with this one. I know its hard but try and be positive :) take it easy for the next couple of weeks and see how you go. I had a scan early on with this one im 24 wks now but had a scan aroud 6 weeks and they struggled to see anything which wasnt the best so had another at what we thought was 8 weeks but actually turned out i was only 6 wks then! I am sorry you are going through this
Anyway from what my dad is telling me 40 is the new 30 and you are only as old as you feel!! :)
xxxxx big hugs xxxxx

Hi Chestnut,

I'm really sorry to hear your going through this, I had a MMC last April and it's devastating. Hopefully this pregnany will be ok, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Take care xxx

Chestnut99 · 22/02/2011 19:51

As the day has gone on, nature has begun to do its thing and the MC has started :(

Thanks for your messages of support and thanks for the thoughts about getting things investigated - will discuss with DH. I don't want to put myself under pressure and start worrying about being able to have another DC but if it could be something simple causing the problems, it would be awful to think we could have sorted it out before.

Bye bye little smidge - I guess it wasn't meant to be :(

PS and I forgot to look up from my own troubles for two secs Blush and say a big congratulations to jasmine and savannahrose - I hope it all goes smoothly for you both after your lost ones.

Will hunt out Prof Regan's book - I have her pregnancy one and found it very down to earth.

Didn't want to read and run... I'm so sorry to hear that Chestnut. I'm really lucky that I have never miscarried (as far as I know) but my mum's side of the family has a history of multiple miscarriages so it has always been a fear of mine. xx

ng1412 · 22/02/2011 21:00

Sorry to hear that Chestnut. Look after yourself and make sure you have some decent rest xx

LimeJellyforBrains · 22/02/2011 21:35

So sorry you are going through this Chestnut, my heart goes out to you xx

Your story is very similar to mine:

I had a MC at 6wks. Then I had DS1. I was nearly 37 when he was born. 18 months later I got pregnant again but MC at 10 weeks, although am certain baby died at about 6 wks (no pg symptoms, stopped feeling pg). Then a gap, then when I was 39 got pg again and MC at 5 wks. Lovely, lovely GP decided as I had had 2 in a row and 3 altogether and did not have time to waste he referred me for tests straight away. Initial tests neg, then I got pg again, and went to tell GP on the very day that further blood test results came back. Tests showed I had a blood clotting problem so GP advised me to take aspirin. Started bleeding next day, and away on holiday for a week the next day. Lovely GP arranged for a scan for when I got back. Bled for several days, did not feel pg. Then went for the scan at about 6/7 weeks....and there was DS2 wriggling away! Attached to his sac was another, empty one - poss the cause of the bleeding? I was 40 when DS2 was born. Hope this gives you hope: I was the same age as you and, like you, got pg easily (4 out of 5 were 'first time lucky'). That is a really good thing for both of us, isn't it?

Would also recommend Prof Regan's book.

Take care, and think about having the tests if you want to. Hope your GP is helpful too.

Oh Chestnut am so sorry to read your post.

I have had 3 MMC since TTC#2 when my son turned one, all around the 11 - 13 week mark. After the third one last summer I had all the tests done (NHS ones, plus I went private for some others). In my case all came back clear, so am trying again now, but at 43 (today! :(AngryWink) am becoming resigned to the fact that my DS may be an only, and that my eggs are just too old now.

You however are a spring chicken at only 40, so have all crossed for you that you get some insight after tests, and either a treatable diagnosis or the reassurance to plough on with optimism.

Good luck.

jasmine51 · 23/02/2011 14:33

jollster 43 year old mums rock, dont give up. My 43 yr old eggs were aged at just 28 yrs old...it aint necessarily about your age x

randomimposter · 23/02/2011 20:33

jasmine thanks for my best birthday present today Grin. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy x

Chestnut99 · 24/02/2011 23:26

Thanks again everyone for the support, positive stories and all your suggestions - all so helpful. Am going to go and talk to my GP next week and talk about the tests and what could be done. "Forty" and "fertility" are scarey "F" words but it would be silly to struggle on in ignorance if there could be a simple solution. And if it turns out that it just age, at least we will know.

Frida - I missed you out earlier - congrats on your pregnancy too and I hope it all goes smoothly :-)

chestnut so sorry for your loss.

Just to say while you are getting checked out, do ensure they check your thyroid too. Underactive thyroid is a factor in early miscarriage sadly. (I lost at 6 wks in March 09 prior to getting diagnosed and starting treatment - the hint to check throid came from MN) Your TSH reading should be between 0.4 - 2.0 during pregnancy according to the NHS CKS website. Good luck to you.

nurse95 · 27/02/2011 08:42

Blondieminx

Sorry, may be being dumb but what is the NHS CKS website? I am 6 weeks and have just noticed a small amount of brown bleeding and I have an underactive thyroid. My GP said my TSH was ok but I'm not sure of the actual reading. Thank you

nurse95 · 27/02/2011 13:04

Chestnut have just read back and am sorry I got caught up in myself. i just wanted to say I am very sorry for your loss. I wish you all the best for the future x

blondieminx · 27/02/2011 18:48

Chestnut good luck with getting checked out. I hope they can get you some answers. But best to get checked over to see if there's anything they can give you to try and prevent you going through the same heartache again :(

Nurse95 and others interested to see the official guidance for management of hypothyroid ladies during pregnancy is here Always insist on being given the actual numbers from your results - don't accept "the doctor's signed it off as normal" from the receptionist. Particularly if you have history, you could ask your GP to refer you for consultant-led care by an endocrinologist.

NHS runs a Clinical Knowledge Summaries site for GP's. If you do suffer underactive thyroid then you should have bloods done at least every trimester and particularly at 34/35 weeks as a Dutch study showed that underactive thyroid can be a factor in birth complications too so it's as well to make sure your levels are perfect before you get too close to your due date so there is one less thing to worry about!

HTH some of you, and good luck to all.
