Sciatic Nerve - 24 weeks

Hi there

Every morning when I wake up, i am getting shooting pains in my bottom and think it is my sciatic nerve. I then limp around all day - its driving me mad although I am not in the least bit worried about it! Anybody had anything similar and any tips on how I can get the little lady to move around away from the nerve?

Hi I have same thing an sometimes nothing works but sometimes if I drink somethin cold he moves off it but no miracle cure sorry.

It might be worth seeing a physio experienced with pregnancy (have a look here).

I got sciatica with DD2 - but for me it was more a postural thing causing the muscles the sciatic nerve runs through to go into spasm. Seeing a physio helped a lot - apparently its quite common in pregnancy, as the back muscles try to compensate for the growing bump and provide core stability - they're not designed for it and can run into problems.

Hope you can get something sorted, though, as its not nice.

I've been suffering with sciatica past 4 weeks (i'm 29 weeks now). Constant and painful but not a lot can be done. What is recommended is anti-inflammatory medication (ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen) but of course we can't have this. MW recommended hot baths, heat packs, paracetamol. Walking is difficult and painful. Another one of these things we have to grin and bear i think.

the best thing to do is a double pigeon yoga pose for several minutes several times per day. make sure that your legs are at a 90 degree angle though. here:

a few other useful poses (you might want to modify some as appropriate) www.womenfitness.net/top10_yoga_exercises.htm

I also have sciatica and havent found anything to relive it permananetly. Lying on an labour ball moves the baby off the nervebut it only works for a couple of hours before he gets back on my nerves again!
I am desperate for other alternatives to grinning and bearing Smile. I hear you can self refer to a physio so am looking into this.
Will try yoga poses this evening

gysela, how are you lying on a birthing ball? i just bought one and am curious to find some practical applications... so far, i found it useful for doing Kegel exercises... sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread...

gysela · 23/02/2011 11:03

lilly its more like kneeling and draping your upper body over it. Like the second picture on here adobedoulas.com/birthball.html
My baby is posterior and I find this position helps move him when he is sitting on my back. I intend to use it in labour too

lilly13 · 23/02/2011 16:42

thank you! i didn't realise it would be ok to lying on the belly... mine is posterior, too.. i will try.

JimmyChoo17 · 23/02/2011 17:22

Oooo good thread - I havent felt my left butt cheek/leg/lower back properly in a couple of weeks now.

I have one of those balls - just need to get it blown up!

gillykins2011 · 24/02/2011 08:21

Lilly13 - thanks so much. The pigeon pose is working a treat! Also, made me realise that preg yoga was not a luxury last time so registered to go back every week again. Thanks and let's hope our babies move soon! Mine is in breech but had a breech baby last time and didn't have any of this!
