Head at the top of the curve?!

Please reassure me that I'm not growing a baby I won't be able to get out of me!

Just been for a scan at 32 weeks, baby's estimated weight is 2.5kg (which I know is unreliable) and they expect another kilo over the next 8 weeks which means an 8lber but what's freaking me out is that the head measurement is right at the top of the curve. Everything else is pretty much in the middle, except the slightly higher weight.

I'm freaking out quite considerably as I don't have childbearing hips by any stretch of the imagination! And the idea of an episiotomy terrifies me.

What can I do to prepare my body for a baby with a ginourmous head?

scan estimates are completely unrealiable. i had a scan at 28 weeks which told me dd was going to be tiny, there was a huge panic, the sonographer was full of dire warnings. i went to a specialist who showed me that the measurements are so subjective as to be almost not worth considering. (they also told me that it's much harder getting an accurate measurement on very thin women, who knew, so if you're unusually slim that may also affect it). as it turned out she was only 6lbs compared to my previous 9.5 pounder, but we had a complete freak out for no reason at all.

I was told my DS had a big head at a 35 week scan!!
He was breech and the sonographer commented on his head size, I told the consultant and he had a word with her. Told her not to comment on stuff like that, I thought there was something wrong. Infact he had a perfect size head.

Don't worry too much :)

I also wouldn't worry about it. We had extra scans because large heads run in DH's family but they didn't show anything to be concerned about. They said DD was larger than she in fact turned out to be.

The other thing is that you can prepare all you like, but something else might happen. I did perineal massage just in case DD had a big head (she didn't), but it was all for nothing because the little madam wrapped both arms around her head anyway. I pushed for ages before having to have an episiotomy to get her out.

And I really did not want an episiotomy. It was the one thing I wanted to avoid at all costs. But, when it came to it, DD was getting distressed and it was the only thing to do. I didn't feel a thing.

Someone on another recent thread mentioned the epi-no, a balloon thingy you inflate inside yourself to prepare your body for childbirth, but it's £90...

Educate yourself on all of the options, do perineal massage if you like, and don't worry about it too much, if you can help it.

Good luck x
