Anyone have any suggestions for a good carrier or sling for plus sized ladies? I also have fairly large boobs!

i am a size 24 with impressive norkage and the baby bjorn fits a treat. DD2 is in it now at 13 days, and I carried DD1 in it till she was too heavy (about 6mo).

Really recommend a wrap sling like a Kari Me.

ilythia · 21/02/2011 20:55

I had a normal ring sling, was size 20, and it fitted okay, also had pouches and a wrap but I coudl onyl use a long wrap, otherwise it was fine.
I found the ring sling the best but the wrap (especially on the back) was the msot comfortable.
They do not actually look flattering with big norks though, can't be helped!

What Bumperlicious said, I was a 22 with big boobs and Kari Me worked well for me (and DH who is 6ft tall and 50" chest!).

I also had a Baby Bjorn which worked well too, but is a bit boob-crushing. However, I found it better for longer journeys than Kari Me.

I am a size 18/20 and I have used: a Moby wrap (tie on side or back instead of in front), Ergo (performance and sport models have larger belt sizes; original may work depending on where you carry your weight) and a ring sling. Lots of carriers are sized to fit a range, including big and tall people. :)

wrap sling - most flattering as well (no straps/buckles digging into your more 'padded' sections Wink.

I had a Hug A Bub, but Kari-me/Moby also great.

Hi wishwales
I've just bought a book called Babygami (ebay - couple of £). I bought it mostly for the stuff about swaddling, but there's a section at the back about how to tie your own slings - you buy a length of material and they show you how to wrap it.

I'm a size 18, so was quite impressed to see this - imagine you can make it fit anyone. Might be worth giving this a try? Hopefully some other Mumsnetters with a bit more experience than me can post their experiences of DIY slings this way?!

Good luck x

I'm a size 18/20 and using a moby wrap for dc4. It's really comfortable, doesn't make my shoulders or back ache, and because the material is spread out across my back and around the middle, it doesn't create any lumps or bumps.
I had a baby bjorn type carrier for previous babies, and don't remember them being as comfy, and even in the middle of summer always wore something to cover up over the top, cos it made fat bits appear in odd places!

I have heard so many good things about the Kari Me but the only mum I have seen wearing one was quite petite. Maybe I will go for that one.

I bought a Babasling because hubby and I love the bright orange color. Since then I have gotten loads of negative feedback about it though.

As far as DIY, I am hopeless but might suggest this to DH.

Thanks so much for all the tips and advice! Keep them coming!

Hi
I am a size 18 ish and used Didymous and Storch wraps with DC 2 - as somebody else they don't look as flattering on bigger ladies but are very practical and I could carry DS for long distances (walked 5 or 6 miles in it and stopped to watch a parade for half an hour mid way once, without discomfort) and extended periods of time up until he was about 10 months, when I switched to a framed back carrier out and about and didn't carry him as much indoors, as he didn't need or want it as much.

I had a Baby Born with my DC1 but didn't get on with it really and it was accurately uncomfortable to wear for long once she was about 5 months - both my kids were big heavy babies (though slimmed out once walking). I tried using the Baby Born as main baby transport on holiday when DC1 was 5 months and ended up with acute back pain and shoulder pain. I would say go with a wrap style if you want to use it a lot or for longer than an hour. Also I have read the Baby Born style carriers dangle babies from their crotch and don't give good support, so are not great for baby's spine either - I think they are not intended for extended use!

I have bought a Didymous ring sling for no. 3 as the draw back of wraps is getting them on and off when out and about - dragging ends in puddles etc. - it seems good so gar but I have only had a practice over bump with DC1's big doll, and a brief try with my large 3 year old, so have yet to discover if it is the ideal solution for newborn!

Definitely make sure you get the long length wrap or ring sling or it will be too small, as long as you do you should have no problems!
