Foul cold - any tips?

I have a really disgusting cold - rivers of snot, chesty cough, stinking headache - and am craving, yes craving, soluble aspirin which I guess is a no-no. How bad are other drugs? Anyone got any good tips for feeling better when you don't want to or shouldn't just dose up on a load of drugs?

Hi - I feel for you as I've suffered some horrible colds this winter. I found hot water with lemon and honey was good, hot ribena, spicy soup with chili - like a hot thai soup (helped clear the snot!), and Albus Oil - a few drops in some boiling water and inhale. I checked with my MW, pharmacist and doctor and they all said Albus Oil and Vicks rub were fine to use. Oh, and paraceutemal for the headache (not sure if I spelled that right!)

...and plenty of cheesey DVDs and daytime tv, and ice cream :-)

Really hope you feel better soon.

I read something in the paper the other day about zinc reducing the length and severity of colds, and my dd has a bad cold atm. I started feeling ill so have been using those vitamin c and zinc fizzy tablets and spraying first defence up my nose, and I feel much better! Don't know if you can use them whilst pregnant though.

Thank you ladies! I feel ok as long as I'm actually eating or drinking a hot drink and awful if not. The Olbus oil is a good tip, and I'll try hot lemon and honey right now (though did just resort to paracetamol too - is it ok in normal does or should I limit it more than usual?)

Nice to get some sympathy as am on my own at home, allegedly working but in reality just moping. And the cat is no use at all, and baby (am 17 weeks pg) does some strange lurching if I cough too much which makes me feel guilty!

Hi
As far as I know, paracetamol is ok to take in the normal dose - think it is 2 every 4 hours. (Checked with the doc and mw on this too!)

It's horrible not being able to take anything stronger, and it seems when you are pg the congestion is even worse than normal!

I found having a window open helped too, getting some air circulating was good for relief (although to keep warm you need to wrap up in more blankets)!

Olbas oil and vicks are fine. Steam if it helps.

Paracetamol is fine in normal doses.

I think doing whatever helps is to be expected whether that's eating chocolate or wallowing in a bath.

Hope you feel better soon. Feeling ill during pregnancy is miserable. You're already somewhat depleted.

Happinose is your friend. It's like Vaseline with olbus oil combined. Because it's on your nose, you'll be able to breathe, and it stops you getting dry red skin.

And take rest, lots of it. I stayed in bed for 2 days last week (unheard of for me) and I recovered so much quicker than I would normally when I try to battle on.

Feel better soon.

try some olbas oil/vicks etc on the soles of your feet when you go to be to night too. Yes really! (best to put some socks on after applying)
