Anti-nausea drugs

I'm 10 weeks pg with DC2.

With DC1 I had really bad morning sickness from 6 - 14 weeks - throwing up at least once a day, usually 3 or 4 times - and lost a stone and a half before putting any baby weight on. The doctor gave me anti-sickness drugs which I took on particularly bad days. Also used Sea Bands, although nothing else worked (and can't stand ginger - it makes me throw up even when not pg)

This time, the nausea hasn't been quite so bad, or at least not as constant - but I don't have the wieght to lose this time. My body seems to know this, so although I end up coughing, gagging and heaving with my head down the loo, I'm not actually throwing up.

The last couple of days have been particularly bad - lower back pain, abdmoninal cramps, debilitating exhaustion and constant nausea. It has come as a bit of a shock because I've been OK up to now apart from the odd bad day and being tired.

I just feel that if I can get rid of the nausea (and the sore throat from coughing and gagging), I could cope with the exhaustion, but I don't want to go bothering the doctor if they are not likely to prescribe anything because I am not actually throwing up.

So, I was just wondering whether anyone had anti-sickness or anti-nausea meds when they weren't actually vomitting?

hello

Im 10 + 6 and have been really suffering with sickness / hyperemisis.

have been signed off since 6 weeks...
anyway i went to the doctor several times and they wouldnt give me anything, and its practise policy not to prescribe them unless really essential.
when i hadnt kept anything at all down for 48 hours (not even ice) Dr prescribed me antisickness, (24 hours before she wouldnt)

I couldnt keep them down though and went back the next day, feeling like death afte 72hours of not keeping anything down and was admited to hospital through dehydration.

My GP will prescribe them now Smile, but unless i had been so so so sick i know she wouldnt.....
I got them when i walked into her surgary (having also been the day before) and crying cause i felt just so ill,

the feeling is horrid though.

also i am now having acupuncture, and while i am still sick it is definitely helping and id recommend anyone tries it.

also wearing seabands 24/7!

the anti-sickness tablets I have are also used for travel/motion sickness. they are good (although they do knock me out!) if its affecting your daily routine then they should give you something. like nannyl, I have had hypermesis as well

I didn't have morning sickness they you all have, never pukeed although felt nausea ALL day long for weeks. I did however have a really bad case of food poisoning just before I hit the 12 week mark and they would not give me anything at all, no matter how much I begged. I couldn't even keep down water let alone ginger ale and all that other stuff that's supposed to help. I think there is basically zero by way of medication you can safely take for nausea unless you have hyperemesis.

i was prescribed an anti-emetic at about week 7 because of extreme nausea (but no sickness) meaning i couldn't eat and even drinking was an issue, i had ketones in my urine and felt so awful. ask your doctor, you never know!

theonlyhb2 · 21/02/2011 15:46

to be fair, del1, it works!

I was prescribed anti-nausea drugs (my GP had no hesitation -- and told me she took them herself when she was pregnant). They didn't work for me though. I've heard that they don't work so well for nausea but do work quite well if you're actually sick.

Personally I found the 24-hour nausea stage worse than the sickness stage (which came later). I lost the best part of a stone in the first trimester and didn't have anything to lose really.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies.

The doctor I saw last time had no problem prescribing the tablets - I wasn't really expecting her to give me anything given I saw her a few weeks earlier to get the pregnancy confirmed and she gave me a lecture about how pregnancy wasn't and illness.

However, when I told her the extent of the sickness she was quite sympathetic.

To be honest, I'm finding the nausea harder this time than the sickness last time. At least I felt better for a short while after being sick, but this time, despite the gagging and retching, I still feel terrible and have now developed a blerdy cough to boot!

I think I'll see how I am tommorrow - if the nausea doesn't subside, I'll go down the docs and see what they say. I've got meetings all this week, so really need to up my game a bit.
