Is this normal for induction?

Wasn't sure if this was a pg or childbirth thing so have tried both.

Is this sort of thing the norm?

Have had an induction booked that should be happening tomorrow. Ring up today to confirm and they tell me they are v busy so no antenatal space for me tomorrow. Instead, I have to ring up tomorrow and be told if they have space on a 'day unit' for me to be induced at, which seems to be a room with a TV and possibly another room with a few beds (was quite unclear). They won't really know even when I get there though if and when I will have the induction process started as depends on their fullness, so, I could be sitting around all day waiting for nothing only to be told to go home and come back the next day (as no where for me to spend the night). I just like to know what's happening and when and this is freaking me out a bit.

Please calm down.
This seems to be the way of maternity units.
Births cannot be timed perfectly (unless cs!) and a sudden influx of labouring women can mean inductions have to be delayed.

I presume this is your first birth, and so induction may take a while (mine took over 24 hours to kick in and labour to start fully) so putting you in a day unit seems logical.

Are you being induced because you are overdue, or for other reasons?

Could also be down to scheduling.
My local hospital does planned CS on Tuesdays and Fridays and so won't induce women on Mondays and Thursdays, IYSWIM.

Yes it is my first! Not sure of the day unit thing as I've been told antenatal is full and most likely to remain so tomorrow night - so if they induce me tomorrow and it takes a while to work (which was what I was assuming) where will I go in the night time once I've been induced but things haven't ramped up yet? I assume they will hurry things up induction wise to get me down to labour ward??

Am being induced on due date due to GD and big baby btw.

Hi Angels I'd come on here to wish you look for tomorrow and then found this thread.

Seems like you need double the luck now.

When I had that GD class and tour that I had a few weeks back they said that induction might be delayed if they were really busy unless it was being doing because they had immediate concerns about the baby. So I think what they are telling you is normal practice.

Also, we were advised to pay for a private room if I didn't fancy doing all of early labour in the public ante-natal ward. In my hospital they won't move me to a delivery room until I'm at least 5cm and I don't fancy getting to that if there's a lady and her family sat in the next bed. If you are able to pay for a room then that might get you admitted tomorrow. I have to pay £100 a night, which isn't great but overall I think it's worth it.

Anyway good luck do let us know over on the GD thread when you get home with your lovely baby.

Yes very normal. I was booked in the afternoon but induction did not start till 7 hours later.

slowangels1 · 20/02/2011 18:02

hey happy . Thing is, my hospital is brand new and supposdily all own bed rooms - I didnt even know there was an old style ward on it as they boast about EVERYONE having their own room! So all rooms are taken (ie the antenatal ward is all own rooms) that's why I'm being sent to the day unit to wait it out. I wouldn't mind waiting if I had own room.

Tbh I'm suprised it seems normal to behave like this. Maybe I'm expecting far too much Hmm

The day unit I was induced on was just off the "normal" ward. I stayed in overnight in there my first night.
I did find it quite easy to get to 5cm, and my waters were broken by an overzealous midwife in the day unit too.
I only moved to delivery suite when the Oxytocin really started kicking in.

OTH, I had a private room after the birth (was long and complicated labour, spent 15hrs in recovery room) and the relative peace and calmness was really helpful.

No hospital can predict workload so sometimes this happens. Better to wait for things to quieten down than be induced with no rooms or staff to look after you.

oh angels please dont worry, im sure everything will be fine! I want to wish you lots of luck and a very speedy delivery, look forward to hearing about your new arrival over in the feb thread!

slowangels1 · 21/02/2011 07:56

thanks all. I'm awaiting to ring the delivery suite in 5 mins to see what is going on and if they have any space for me on this day unit...

Any news slowangels1?

happycamel · 21/02/2011 18:18

Hi Angels do let us know how you are, when you can

Firawla · 21/02/2011 19:09

yes very normal i think.
it is frustrating but just the nature of maternity services i think. i was induced and was waiting around a long time, from morning till evening. all the other women i went in with were not even induced at all till the next day, so even longer! but they said its due to making sure there's enough space in the labour ward, they can't induce so many people and then end up with no rooms for them to give birth in, so it is better they take their time and consider that rather than induce you straight away and everyone end up giving birth in a corridoor or something. but i do sympathise cos you feel like you just want to get it started and enough of the hanging around
anyway good luck!!
