A child's sized toothbrush has a much smaller head, so its less likely to make you gag.

No helpful suggestions (apart from mouthwash perhaps?) but just wanted to say an enormous CONGRATULATIONS!!!! We were on the TTC threads at the same time so I feel like I 'know' you even though you probably won't remember me. Brilliant news, I am so pleased for you.

Thanks MrsWednesay - feels really odd now meeting up with people from the TTC threads, already seems like an age ago!

I thought I might try those finger cover things that brush your teeth? Anyone know what they are called????If not, kids brush might be good......

Runtus, I have exactly the same problem. I have solved it by only brushing my teeth when I feel least sick (thats also when I have to take my vitamin tablet or I throw that up) As long as you are getting near your teeth at some point it doesnt matter that its not am and pm like normal.
By the way those brush away things were far worse for the vomitting that the normal toothbrush!

Another point is that my dentist was adamant that I shouldnt brush my teeth until at least one hour after I had vomited. The vomit erodes your tooth enamel so brushing harms the teeth. This meant that I couldnt brush for several weeks when I was sick all the time (I still did but gently). He said to make sure you wash and spit your mouth out with tons of water after each vomit to neutralise the acids.

Use loads of water so you don't end up with gloops of toothpaste in your mouth - I keep a large glass of water which I liberally rinse my mouth out with. Know exactly what you mean!

Chloe55 · 17/10/2005 16:25

I know what you mean, I have stopped having morning sickness but I still wretch everytime I brush my teeth (am23 weeks pg) I think it has now become psychological! A small kids toothbrush does help, I think Flame suggested that to me at the time.

sweetheart · 17/10/2005 16:26

ha ha ha!!!! How did I know this was you before I opened the thread

I take it the rip, slip, brush, ahhhhhh things didn't work!!!

flamebat · 17/10/2005 17:37

Lol Chloe - the hygenist suggested it to me, and I was so excited I just keep telling everyone

runtus · 19/10/2005 09:35

OK the rip, slip whatever things still make me gag and twice i've thrown up with my finger in my mouth.....which I think may actually be worse!

Going to have to try the kids toothbrush as my last resort, if that doesn't work I'll just have to have smelly breathe I suppose! The thought of gargling mouthwash is totally repulsive so not even going to attempt that one........

Do you think a non-minty toothpaste might help? You could try one of the children's fruity ones.

runtus · 19/10/2005 09:51

Sadly no, its not the toothpaste so much as the feel of the toothbrush in my mouth.........

Oh, what a pain.

AnnaK · 19/10/2005 13:19

With me it was the consistency of the toothpaste that did it. I changed brands and I stopped gagging. Feel for you, runtus.

shhhh · 19/10/2005 15:30

I was the same when I was pregnant and the fact/thought of brushing my teeth while standing over a sink made me worse and ended up making me sick LOL! What helped me was by brushing my teeth while in the shower ...It worked though!

I managed it this morning with a regular toothbrush (normally use electric) so finally feel a bit cleaner..............have to stay well away from the back of my mouth and rinsing is a very quick affair but better than before.

I like the shower idea, might give that a go....

Hopefully it will last and my back teeth won't all fall out by next May!

flamebat · 20/10/2005 13:49

I'd forgotten about it being easier in the shower - I second that suggestion

runtus · 20/10/2005 16:53

OK just done the weekly shop and bought some toothpaste/mouth washall in one liquid stuff, instead of normal toothpaste.........will let you know how I get on!
