Is it normal to have no appetite in the first trimester?

My morning ickness is awful when i eat so now I think my body is trying to reject food. I am 10 + 5. Is this normal?

I have no appetite at all hun am 9 weeks tomorrow. am hungrey then get my food and do not really want it and sit playing with it or am cooking for the dc and the thought of even putting it in my mouth makes me want to throw up am hoping that my appetite comes back soon xx but on the pluss side all i wanted with ds1 was Sara Lee Double chocolate Gatux ate one a day for nine months to my self went from a size 14 to 18.A m so glad they do not sell them round here any more

thefurryone · 20/02/2011 17:17

Yes, well it was normal for me. Problem was more nausea than actual sickness but just couldn't really face any food, apart from bread, cheese, special k and haribo and even then that was just so I didn't faint. I even went off chocolate!

It started to get better for me at around 15/16 weeks.

Hope you feel better soon.

lovemysleep · 20/02/2011 17:24

I'd make the most of it - I'm currently 6 weeks pg, and eating like a horse. I anticipate being a fat bloater very soon, and would love to not have an appetite!

Hope the sickness goes for you soon - sure this puts alot of people off food, but for me, eating keeps it at bay.

magentastardust · 20/02/2011 17:32

As long as your midwife happy with your weight try not to worry.
When I was pregnant with my DS I could only stomach very bland food such as dry baked potatoes and I was sick up to 6 times a day -I ended up losing weight during pregnancy!
Make sure you are drinking plenty and try and eat when you can just mention it at your next appointment.
I am now on my 3rd pregnancy and haven't had the same problem this time-I cant stop eating!

deebray · 20/02/2011 19:12

I really really wouldn't worry - I'm 14 weeks and I don't think I ate enough to keep a sparrow alive in my first trimester, but I comforted myself in the knowledge that the baby would suck the fat out from between my toes before it starved in there!

I don't have cravings and still now have days where I don't eat more than a sandwich or some toast ... just DRINK plenty and keep your fluids up.

Just mention it to your midwife at your next appointment but I wouldn't worry overly

Thankyou all.

Feeling a bit more reassured.

I've spent most of my pg with no appetite. Find something that you can stomach (weetabix for me) and east it whenever you can in small doses. Water helps as well.

Your body will make sure the baby gets what it needs first and then look after you, so don't worry that you're harming him / her.

i had HG right at the start, and after 2 weeks of hardly any food and constant puking, I had already gone up 3 bra sizes! yet still, at 15 weeks, I am lighter than I have been for 4 years.

I have also become the fussiest eater and cant eat much at a time as my stomach wont digest it.

jelly for breakfast is amazing, followed by ham & dairylea toasties and mini eggs Smile

just eat what you fancy, it doesnt matter if it's "bad". fast food is, ironically, all I can really stomach apart from the above.

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 21/02/2011 10:36

I felt like I had no appetite but actually I did (I wasn't throwing up though). What I didn't have was any desire to prepare food at all. But if food was presented to me, I could/would eat it.

Hopefully you'll come right as rain around week 12 :) hang in there

WiiUnfit · 21/02/2011 20:20

Hey lolajane2009, please don't worry too much about your lack of appetite - I didn't have one at all due to morning "sickness" - (nausea mainly, I only threw up twice) until around 14 weeks & lost quite a bit of weight in my first trimester, 22 weeks now & baby is doing great! Just hang in there, hoping it passes for you soon. :)

FYI, I found dry cornflakes a lifesaver, I could eat them quite happily with a glass of milk & ate tons of them in my first 14 weeks!!!

JumpingForJuly · 22/02/2011 14:37

Hi

Just to say, Im 21 weeks but like you during the first trimester I just couldnt eat which is very unusual for me, I've got my appetite back and now can't stop eating!!

I think its your body changing, everything moving around.

I am surviving on peanut butter sandwiches, corned beef sandwiches and grapefruits at the moment.

Hi there

I've lost my normal appetite too (@ 9+4). Been a bit nauseas, but not been sick. Gone off food that I usually really like, and seem to have developed a liking for more cake and chips! Not cravings as such, just fancy it more.

Can't be bothered doing any cooking at the moment, usual food doesn't seem all that appetising.

I'm sure it's all normal, I think everyone is probably different.

KatieWatie · 22/02/2011 18:40

I'm about 7wks now and hardly eating at all, not because I'm nauseous (that hasn't kicked in yet) but just because I don't feel hungry and can't be bothered eating. I can't get enough of the mineral water though, very weird.

I'm a bit like this when not pregnant anyway, but I do think I should probably eat a bit more.

What with the not eating and no alcohol I should be losing weight hand over fist, except I'm not Confused

Daisybell1 · 22/02/2011 19:21

I had bad nausea for several weeks accompanied by wobbliness and extreme exhaustion. I also had no interest in preparing food, in fact it almost used to bring me to tears, but I would eat it if put in front of me.

But I forced myself to eat, and eat often, and I felt so much better. Its almost like I've learnt to power through, and I do wonder if my symptoms were part of me craving extra nutrition (I now know that if I'm feeling sick then I'm hungry).

It may be worth trying to get a bit more food into you and see if it helps.

angelsw12 · 23/02/2011 17:50

Hiya

I am 9+2 and since exactly 6 weeks haven't felt like eating, especially in the evenings. I am too exhausted to cook so my lovely BF has been cooking every evening and I have chased it around the plate for a while and eaten a little bit and then had to leave the table as I couldn't stand to see it any longer. And then I usually feel sick anyway.

I seem to be ok in the mornings if I eat toast, nothing else. Lunchtimes I am better although also seem to just fancy food that is smeared with cheese or mayo haha. I guess if I am not having much in the evenings then a few calories extra at lunch won't do too much harm.

I think it's completely normal.

I definitely feel better if I eat little and often although this is not always practical.

Lets hope our appetites come back soon! I miss nice food!

flamegirl77 · 23/02/2011 22:00

I'm the same and I love my food normally. Lots of good advice above. If you find things you can tolerate, definitely a good idea to eat them 'little and often'. Even if they aren't 'good for you'.

My husband has had to stop clearing my plate as it has been affecting his waistline...

Good luck and congratulations!
