Has anyone used a crib instead of Moses basket?

Hi were pg with dc 2 and I'm considering having the
Moses basket I used with dd1 downstairs and a crib in our room so I'm not carrying Moses and 2 dc up the stairs every night. Plus the rocking sounds a good settler. Any ideas? Tia

I have just about a month ago taken ds2 out of his crib when he was 7 months. I really liked the crib didn't use the rocking much but did feel I got so much more use out it overa moses basket. Dd used to hit her hands off the side of the basket from weeks old so the crib being wider and obiously much longer made it worth while.
I never used a basket in the day, pram has a carrycot so day sleeping in that. Carrycot was good as having the older dc meant I didn't need to disturb him just chuck on some more blankets and go out. That was my main factor in choosing a pram with carrycot actually.

I've used a crib with all of mine - not a rocking one, it's similar to this I've never used a Moses basket. Babies tend to nap in the pram during the day when the are very small (I was always terrified of basket being knocked etc over by toddlers). We go from crib to co-sleeping so haven't needed a bigger cot.

We have used a crib for our 2 brilliant, Ds who was bigger than SILS Ds was still in there at 6 months, SILs Ds had out grown moses basket at 2months.

Yes we had a beautiful one. I regret selling it, it was such a lovely keepsake. Sad

Yes, I have one that has been in DH's family for years. It's wicker and the top is the height of a radiator. We'll have it in our room and I'm planning to use the pram bit of our icandy cherry as a moses basket downstairs.

My problem is that I can't find a mattress that fits the crib so I'm going to have to buy one, and cut it down. Apparently I also need a different mattress for the pram to use it as a moses basket for day time sleeping and have no idea about that.

If you find a good source of mattresses let me know!

Happycamel it depends on what type of mattress is in the pram for daytime sleeps little babies don't really need much TBH a nice reasonably firm foam mattress in the pram should be enough and the one with the pram may be fine. What size is the family crib?

I used a crib for daytime naps (co-slept at night)very handy, and by the time she grew out of it she slept in the big bed.

Not too sure about the rocking, really. I think there's a theory that if it was going to be a soother it should rock head to toe rather than side to side. I certainly never got into a rocking habit, but you never know it might suit you. When my baby was asleep in the sitting room she was usually snoozing on a folded towel. I am only just beginning to realise that this might not be the generally accepted practice...

I used a crib with my ds. We started with a moses basket for dd (now 4yo) but she hated it so much I bought a crib on ebay and it was much better. Never really used the rocking too much, but as she (and now ds) could see out of the sides instead of only seeing the ceiling, sleeping at night was a much happier experience!

As for a mattress, try cotbed mattress factory I had a cotbed mattress from them and it's absolutely beautiful at a fraction of the cost of one from mothercare or John Lewis. They do custom sizes and cribs and moses mattresses too.

Happycamel I found a great mattress here that fits my crib (also one that has been in the family for years and so doesn't fit normal mattress sizes).

Never used a moses basket and love my crib.

MrsVidic so sorry for the thread highjack Blush . Thank you so much to everyone for the advice though and I hope it helps others too.

The crib base is 34cm by 60cm.

I'll ask my mum about the pram base, she was a midwife, then a hv before retiring so should know if it is safe or not.

I had a moses basket for dd1 and she was only in it for 6 weeks!

For dd2 we had a lovely crib (she slept in her pram top during the day). It was so much bigger and easier then a moses basket. Dd2 was a big baby and was in it for 6 months.

I did, we have a family cradle which was mine/my brothers, grandad made it so v v special. He re did the padded mattress but I brought another to place on top from Mothercare - was surprised it was an exact fit.

DS love to be rocked, and the best bit was it could be wheeled over to the side of the bed once I was in, so he could in effect co sleep but be in the cradle whilst I put my arm out to swing him.

he was in it until about 4 months, he didn't outgrow it but we were keeping each other awake so he moved into his own room, :)

am using it again for the next one.

ps' I never knew about head to toe rocking, but always did side to side anyway.
