Nuchal scan at 9+2 weeks - any point?

I didn't get a positive result until CD49 (is this right terminology???!). My hospital seems to have a bit of a mental block when it comes to irregular cycles so there's a 3-week discrepancy between my dates and theirs. The upshot is that I'll be having my scan at (by my calcs) 9+2 weeks (12+2 by LMP).

My dates are based on when I think I ovulated - but I'm not overly confident of my sums, not least since DH had been away for a week by that time so conception opportunities (excuse euphemism) were non-existent.

I'm tempted to keep the scan appointment so I can get a realistic date (and see the baby!) sooner rather than later. There is also the slightly trivial but practical issue that the scan date is really convenient and I'm reluctant to risk swapping it for something that will involve taking time off work when I've got a big deadline/finding someone to look after DD/DH being on his travels again. But I know that nuchal scans aren't supposed to be reliable until 10 weeks and I've heard that dating can be a bit off before that point too.

I know I should phone the hospital really but they've never really been able to get their heads around irregular cycles. And there's also the chance that I might be further along than I realise and I don't want to risk leaving it too late.

Thanks in anticipation of any helpful advice on what I should do!

I would have thought that if you have your scan and they date you at nearer 9 weeks than 12 they would recall you for another scan. Happened to a friend was scanned at just 11 weeks - they recalled her a week later for another scan to do the nuchal fold measurements.

I'm not sure how else you'll get an accurate date without going for the scan and if you're wrong and the LMP is right, waiting could be just as problematic.

Given that the bottom line is that you're simply not sure of how pregnant you are, then I would keep the appointment (to ensure NOT missing the window if indeed you're closer to your lmp dates than you imagine). Of course, if it turns out that you're closer to the dates you think then you will be rescheduled as the measurements for NT need to be taken in a certain time frame. Either way, it's win-win if you just attend as scheduled Grin

(oh, and congratulations!)

Thanks both. Glad the consensus is that I should just go ahead. Have a minor twinge of guilt that I might be wasting NHS resources by needing an extra scan but that will pass in no time!
