Admission to hospital for pre-eclampsia

Has anyone been admitted to hospital for pre-eclampsia until term?

First pregancy, have been completely normal and healthy.

After a couple of days in hospital I have been admitted until the baby is delivered (I am 34 + 3).

I am frustrated in the least, because there are so many things that I haven't done yet, that I was planning on using the next couple of weeks to sort out, I haven't finished work yet and every thing there is in a complete mess too. I feel like I have let down a lot of people. I know that the object is a healthy baby and a healthy Mum.

I would feel better if I could go home and just be monitored that way - but I don't think that there is any chance of that happening.

My experience of this is on the other side-I was born 7 weeks early when my mum suffered from pre-eclampsia. I weighed 4lbs and have suffered no ill effects.
I know you must feel really frustrated stuck in hospital and I feel for you good luckGrin

I was living in Canada while I was expecting ds1. I was admitted at 35 weeks and my BP was brought down with magnesium sulfate. This seemed to help so I was released and had a public health nurse round to our house three times a day to monitor my BP and test my urine.

This routine lasted about 10 days when the combination of soaring PBs and a confirmed diagnosis of IUGR and lack of growth for one week led to an induction at 36 weeks.

Ds1 was 5lbs 5oz. I remember feeling very unhappy about having lost the last month of planning and preparing for new parenthood but I was so relieved when he was born healthy and I manage to avoid having seizures.

One of the difficult things with pre-eclampsia is that you feel completely healthy until the final stages when you might experience symptoms headaches, visual disturbances, water-retention etc.

I remember feeling the frustration that you describe but I think that it would be so much better to stay in the hospital and be closely monitored...

I wanted to say thank you all again for your very sensible and calming advice. I have a confirmed diagnosis now, so definitely in hospital until delivery.

I am still on a ward thouhgh (3 people), but hopefully will get my own room as soon as someone else in one of the long stay rooms gets moved out! Will be nice to have some privacy.

As long as my BP stays stable, I am allowed out for 4 hour stints in the afternoon, we live reasonably close to the hospital, so I could actually go home, but I think it will be too hard to go back.

Lastly, the midwives and doctors although I am sure they are stretched are very lovely and have had time to answer my questions.

Any more suggestions for staying sane in hospital welcome!

Hey, another one here...... I was admitted at 31 weeks with pre-e with DS and he was born at 33 weeks (bang on) weighing 3lb 9oz. He spent 4 weeks in SCBU, literally to chunk up, maintain his temperature and learn to feed - there were no medical problems with him. He is an absolutely fabulous two year old now (well part fabulous, part tazmanian devil at times!!).

It won't be forever, you're much further on than I was and the Doctors weren't in slightest bit concerned about DS, they looked at me as if I'd gone mad when I voiced my concerns about survival rate etc. It was like.. "You're 33 weeks, chill out woman!"

From this side of the coin I would say to you ENJOY THE REST!!!!!!

All of your emotions are perfectly normal though. I mourned my pregnancy, I wasn't ready to give up my bump, but it does fade with time.

Good luck with everything. xx.
