I am 21 weeks preggers and planning to give birth at New Cross hospital as its closest to my house and i am doing my training there (not in maternity though)
Whenever i ask people about the maternity unit i just get bad stories as they had a bad maternity reputation many, many years ago. I just want to hear something nice!!

Thanks x

I went there and had a good experience. It's a bit out dated in terms of decor and layout but I can't fault my treatment, the midwife was lovely and luckily I had the same one all the way through.

This time they seem to be doing a good job with me again.

I hadn't heard of their bad reputation although I have only been in this area 7 years but work in healthcare so I'm sure I would of heard something by now if it was that bad.

Completely irrelevant and useless, but I was born there 30 years ago and am absolutely fine! :o
I now live in London, but lots of my friends have had their babies there and received really good care. One even gave birth when the entire unit was locked down because of norovirus and still says that it was a positive experience.

Thanks ladies, i was also born there and am fine too.
Maybe my friends are all too critical, they had strict birth plans etc etc and ended up changing their hospitals to Russells Hall as it in brand spanking new and all sparkly, i just want them to get baby out ok and give me pain relief if i ask for it, im not too fussed about the decor Grin

Just because Russell's hall is new and spangly doesn't mean it is better, you do get your own room which is large and spacious from what I've seen but it is also quite isolating to be on your own, I have friends who went there who said they felt quite lonely nad isolated on their own when their family had gone home. I guess it depends on the individual, six of one half a dozen of the other, like you say safe arrival of the baby beats the decor anyday!

For what its worth the birth plan tends to go out the window when you are actually there doing.

I had my DS there 3 yrs ago and will be back there in a few weeks! Grin

All went well and I didn't have any problems at all. I think it's just because it's on your doorstep you hear some bad stories. Can honestly say everyone I know has had good experiences there.

Good luck Smile

hi, i'm due a csec nxt week at new cross. I had ds there 2yrs ago by emcs and found the care on triage and a5 (post csec ward) pretty good. There were a couple of midwifes/care workers that were a bit abrupt but maybe thats just me. I was admitted again last week for monitoring and all the midwives i saw then were absolutley lovely. Better than my cmw. I think every hospital has it's good and bad points and people are more likely to discuss bad experiences than good. I was born at new x as were my 2 sisters with no problems. My friends who have all given birth at new x, have had a variety of experiences but only one had a particular bad one, and took action with the hospital and it got resolved and is planning another birth and pregnancy at the unit.
Sorry for the long post

I'm booked at NX and had previous DD there - was very happy with the care. The maternity unit had a terrible reputation a few years back but have worked very hard to turn this around and have won awards since and recently for the unit. Have total faith in them and had good experience first time around x
