Hi just wondered if anyone could shed any light on a little worry I have.

I am 30+4 with DC1 and up until now have gained weight at an average rate. BMI was around 26 pre-pregnancy so have always been a little over weight but not majorly so.

Anyway my problem is that I weighed myself today at work (old pre-pregnancy habit that I just can't stop!) and I appear to have lost 4lbs in a week! I can't figure out why and I can't help thinking that at this stage I should probably be gaining weight not losing it.

Has anyone else had a similar experience or can think of a rational explanation for this? I haven't been ill at all or been off my food.

I have 32 week appt in about a week and a half and will mention it then but not sure whether or not it's worth phoning MW about prior to this? I have only been weighed once at booking by them so I'm guessing that weight doesn't hold much store as a diagnostic tool in pregnancy??

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

I think it's normal for weight to fluctuate. I put on 7 lbs in a week, and then lost 4 lbs, without changing my eating habits. I just put it down to my body going through lots of changes Smile.

Don't worry that's not a significant weightless. I lost weight with my first due to nausea and then gastroenteritis and docs were not concerned. Don,t forget yr metabolism increases by about 25% during pg. Tho I can't remember if that's only in first trimester or not...

I wouldn't worry too much as long as baby is doing well. I have low BMI (18) and find it hard to put on weight but eat very healthily. By 28 weeks, I had put on a stone. By 35 weeks, lost half a stone. I am having regular growth scans and baby is growing fine. I think part of the weight is extra water and my legs feel less swollen as of late.

i agree with sh77. the weight tends to fluctuate. i have definitely been retaining a lot of water. my weight seems to jump 2 pounds one day and go down the next day. just eat healthy and it will be ok!

Thanks guys :) baby is still kicking the sh*t out of me so I'm guessing she's fine!! Just thought it odd as was fully expecting to pile on the weight, still 9 weeks to go for that though! Brings my total weight gain to 1st8lbs at this stage and was slightly overweight before so don't think that's too bad.

MrsWajs, don't worry about it. I still weigh less than my pre-pregnancy weight and I'm 35+5. (BMI of 28 pre-pregnancy) My mw was less than concerned and just compared my diet pre-pregnancy and during pregnancy and concluded that it was because the food I was eating now was better. My diet did significantly change once I found out I was pregnant and I just choose to cook healthier, force down more veg and fruit and limit sugary drinks - wasn't really a conscious effort to do this either as my needs just seemed to change.

I do look significantly bigger but then I still wear most of my pre-pregnancy clothes just the fat I had has gone and instead my clothes hug my bump.

Btw, I think your weight gain is totally normal. I am 28+3 weeks and put on 8kg. I've been stressing out that this is too much (pre-preg BMI 19), as most of my family and friends who are similarly built put on 10kg on average throughought the entire pregnancy and i have 3 more months to go Sad. I've seen a really good pregnancy weight calculator online based on original BMI. If i find it, I'll send you the link and you can monitor weekly progress.

here is the calculator www.baby2see.com/pregnancy_weight_calculator.html

Thanks lilly13 that's pretty similar to the site I have been using anyway -www.gurgle.com/tools/pregnancy_weight_gain_calendar/default.aspx

Definitely don't think your weight gain is too much either, I think if your BMI is less than 20 then you're expected to put on a bit more than someone with a BMI of say 24.
