I recently bought some Tommee Tippee bottles/steriliser in the sale, but have since regretted it, as didin't do much research- more of an impulse buy!

I would like to combine breast and bottle after a couple of months- so DH can do some feeds, can anyone recommend the best make of bottle to use?

I am looking for something that will make the baby work hard and replicates breast the best- excuse the pun!

my sis in law has been recommended to use the madela ones - they are apparently the best ones for not confusing the baby, the teats cost £12 per go but they are controlled by the baby's suck like with breastfeeding - her BF counsellor told her to get them. The Baby seems to be v happy with them!

I started introducing the bottle when my DS was about 4 months, just one bottle a day, I used the tommee tippee closer to nature ones and they were fine, did not confuse DS and certainly did not put him off BF and I continued bf till he was 7 months.
would have gone longer but I went back to work and as DS slept through the night I was only bf twice a day and the milk started to dry up then DS started refusing. :(

If you have the tommee tippee ones just use them, they are fine honestly, and good luck! :)

I have bought the TT Closer To Nature ones too. Glad to hear they are recommended, lovemybabyboy :)

Agree with Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature. DD took a long time to persuade about taking a bottle so we tried various brands, but these were the ones she liked best. I also liked the smaller-sized ones for drinks of water, very handy.

We also used Medela, which were handy for fitting to the breast pump (also Medela) and she did take them. You can also get special teats if your DC has any special feeding needs.

However, the Tommee Tippee teats and bottles are readily available in supermarkets, which has to be a huge advantage.

(BTW, we found that DD took bottle fine at one month old (we tried one as an experiment) but when we tried again at 3 months, no chance. Friends also had the same problem. With DC2 I plan to introduce one bottle a day (of expressed breast milk) from quite early on. Friends have done the same with their DC2's and said it worked for them. It allows your OH to be involved with the feeding if they take the last feed of the day with the bottle (whilst you get an early night!) and means that if you do have to go out for an evening you can do so knowing that your DC will take a bottle.)

If u want to mimic the breast without spending 12pounds on a teat (wtf!) Google breastflow bottles, u can get them from Amazon.

I mix fed from Ds's birth and used the standard Avent ones with no problems. We had one tommee tippee bottle that came with the pump I had borrowed and he happily drank from whatever. I slightly disagree with the idea of not introducing a bottle until BF is firmly established if you KNOW you are going to mix feed as I think it must surely be harder for baby to make the switch later on than if right from birth he has lots of different shapes to deal with.

We ended up combination feeding (supply issues in one boob Blush that pereverance/tips from bf counsellor/plenty of rest and support couldn't fix sadly) and we used the Tommy Tippee Closer to Nature ones too. Sucessfully combination fed till 6 months (when DD grew teeth!) Good luck! :)

PigeonPair · 17/02/2011 22:27

Apparently the NUK latex teats ones are closest to boob shape!

Kiwiinkits · 18/02/2011 07:26

I second NUK teats and bottles. We've been combination feeding for 5 months so far. They are slightly more expensive than Tommy Tippee though. The advantage of them is that they make the baby work hard and we never get any issues with gas/burbs. I found that the Medela ones led to the baby being a bit gassy.

mousesma · 18/02/2011 07:30

We used Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature as well. DD had 1 bottle of expressed milk a day from 2 weeks until 4 months when we started mix feeding and giving 2 bottles of formula a day.

Agree with trixie123 about introducing a bottle early to avoid bottle refusal at a later stage.

cocoachannel · 18/02/2011 07:54

trixie and mousesma, I think what you both say about introducing a bottle of ebf early makes very good sense. As a first timer however I am wondering when you actually express the milk (ie. do you fit it into your afternoon routine or similar). Apologies for a potentially very daft Q!! We were told at antenatal class to use milk expressed in the morning in the morning, and that expressed at night and it's all left me a bit Confused

We're keen to try the last feed of the day from a bottle ASAP, to allow me wine earlier nights and give DH an opportunity to be more involved with feeding.

mousesma · 18/02/2011 08:30

I only ever used to feed DD from one boob each feed so I used to give DD her morning feed from one boob then express from the other. DD would then usually have this feed in the evening.

Milk is milk it doesn't matter what time of day it is expressed.

Tommee tippee are fine for this.
