I am looking for advice on disposable nappies please (have thought long and hard about reusable and disposable and have opted for disposable)

I am wanting to stock up whilst I have a higher income before I stop work ( am currently 31 weeks).

I have one pack of huggies newborn (37 pack ) but I found that when I took one out to have a look the tabs on the side were like very very unsticky velcro. Does anyone have any thoughts as to a better brand to use?

I have heard that Tescos own nappies are good for overnight as they are thicker and so last longer. And to perhaps try an active fit for during the day?

I am looking for some expert knowledge on this subject as a first time mum to be I am feeling a little bit lost in the baby aisle in the supermarket.

TIA x

I have found pampers best for newborn babies. They seem to hold everything better (although not always the case Smile)
Huggies always had more of a leak out the sides.

I am currently pg 16 weeks with number 4 and will be stocking up with pamper shortly. Buying a box every now and then till baby arrives.

hope this helps, and Good luck.

Hi,
I used Tesco nappies when my DC1 was born and am doing the same with my next one due soon. One because they were cheap and you go through loads but they also seemed a decent quality.
When my DC got bigger I did go onto pampers because the bigger size Tesco ones didnt seem very good (a bit cheapy in my opinion) which is what Ive always stuck too since.
I got a free pack of Huggies last time with a nappy bag but thought they were rubbish and have never brought them since.
I do know other people that would competely disagree with me tho so I think its personal choice, my advice would be to buy different brands when on offer and see which ones you like best and then stick with them.

Good luck x

You really don't need an active fit nappy for a newborn because they don't move much. No nappies will contain poo-mageddons and you should change small babies every few hours anyway so don't stress about it too much. :)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 16/02/2011 22:52

Why don't you put some money to one side instead, and then you can try a few brands on your baby and buy the ones that work?

We had to try a few brands out before we decided that disposables were rubbish and we bought cloth instead.
Of the disposables though, I would say that Pampers are the best for catching wet newborn poo.

I've been using huggies (or now the costco own brand - which are identical except for the cartoon characters) for the last 5 months and have had no trouble with the velcro stuff.

The one time I bought an emergency pack with sticky stuff rather than velcro I was very disappointed - that velcro stuff is really good!

ChunkyPickle · 16/02/2011 23:05

Oh, and like LadyBiscuit, we've had no blowouts until recently when he started sitting up - and I don't know how anything is going to contain high velocity poo being channeled up a bum crack.....

Goodness it's a glamorous life

Put money aside, try a few brands when baby is born and see what works best for you. There will be one that works best and one that you hate!

Aldi nappies have been the best "ordinary" disposables, but I have mostly used cloth or Bambo eco-disposbles which are brilliant, very absorbent (even overnight) good fit and well worth the cost.

My hierarchy of disposables:

Morrisons
Lidl
Pampers
Tesco
Huggies

PukeyMummy · 17/02/2011 07:30

We used Pampers but I have heard great things from friends about Tesco own-brand.

We tried Huggies but they always leaked. DD was tiny when born, so maybe that was the issue.

FWIW, we also tried washable/reusable but due to DD's size they also leaked. In any case, many nurseries (if that is your childcare plan) won't deal with reusables, only disposables.

Bumpsadaisie · 17/02/2011 13:59

We always used Natural Nappies and found them excellent. DD always got nappy rash in pampers etc, maybe she was allergic to the chlorine?

But really nappies are much of a muchness. They'll all do the job!

PS make sure you don't buy too many really tiny ones if you are doing a massive stock up - babies go up a size quickly!

lurcherlover · 17/02/2011 14:04

Don't buy loads pre-baby. It's impossible to know what will suit yours - I was sure Tesco would be the best as so many people rate them, but they leak all over the place with my DS. Different ones just fit different babies better. Personally I like Pampers Active Fit for DS, but my friend finds them useless with her baby...you get the picture. You can't really go wrong with size one in any brand, I reckon, as your baby won't be moving around in them much and you'll be changing them so often they shouldn't have too much time to leak. But don't buy loads in that size - get a pack for your hospital bag and a couple of packs for home, and then by the time you've used those it may well be time for size 2 and you can start experimenting with brands a bit. Also, don't get too obsessed with the weight guides on the packs - you'll know when you need to move up a size (every poo your baby does will leak up its back...) and it may well be sooner than the weight guidelines would suggest. My DS had a real growth spurt early on and was only in size 2 nappies for about a fortnight before they were too small - I'd stocked up on loads and ended up giving most away. So put money aside now for a nappy fund, but don't stock up yet!

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 17/02/2011 14:13

I've always used own brands and found them to be perfectly fine. Will buy Pampers etc if on a good special. I recall for the first couple of months I did by Pampers/Huggies etc but only because I got so many vouchers for them given to me in Bounty Packs/by supermarkets etc, they were dirt cheap.

I have no brand loyalty - they all seemed pretty good to me.

saoirse86 · 17/02/2011 15:47

I actually much prefer huggies nappies. I'm currently using a mix of huggies and pampers size 3 and I definitely find I have to change the pampers more often. I can't use them overnight because they always leak.

I really like sainsbury's eco nappies but I think they only come in small sizes.

I'm pretty sure the active fot ones are from about size 4.

Thank you everyone, it certainly seems that people have some very different experiences, and that each bum is different...

I think I shall sew some money into the lining of my nappy stacker and use that when necessary Grin
