Hi all
I'm going to a spa this week and am looking for advice as to what I can and cant do. the spa have 'safe pg spa treatments menu' but dont mention the other facilities. I assume the steam room and sauna are out of bounds but what about the spa pool (like a hot bath with strong water jets), plunge pools, jacuzzis, salt water flotation tank? There are normal swimming pools there too but I would be pretty disappointed if that was all I could do.
Oh and I assume I have to stay away from the salad bar which makes me very sad because their food is lovely, but that just about leaves bread rolls and soup for me to eat...not so yum in a hot spa environment.
Any advice?

From what I recall, you can't go into spa pools (but that's just from seeing a sign at Stobo Castle spa about people who are pregnant or have a heart condition). Not so sure about a jacuzzi though as it's not as powerful. You're right about steam room and sauna though, you might overheat. I would guess anything that would dramatically change your body temperature would be a no-no.

Personally, I'm dying to go back to a spa, but putting it off until I can fully enjoy it. I'd be disappointed too if I couldn't do very much.

Why will you have to stay away from the salad bar??!!Confused I think on that one you can relax, unless you're going to the 'Butlins' of spa venues?!Wink

why on earth would you stay away from a salad bar?

MainlyMaynie · 16/02/2011 19:24

The issue with jacuzzis, spa pools etc. is the water temperature, like with hot baths. If the temperature is below 37 degrees you'll be fine. Most seem to be kept hotter than that, but if they have a range to choose from there should be one that is cool enough. Sauna and steam room definite nos (though apparently ok in Sweden, so you might want to research it and decide whether the benefits outweigh the risks for you).

I wouldn't stay away from salad bar!

I'm also off to a spa next week. I'm pretty much planning to just lie by the pool reading a book for most of the day. I think the various pools may be too hot Sad Best idea is probably to call the spa and ask.

Thanks all. I called the spa and they said I could dangle my legs in the spa pool to get a foot and calf massage and I could also use the flotation tanks but that was about it apart from the swimming pools. Oh and they have hot stone beds that would be ok on a low setting. Will still go as it will be nice to sit around reading mags all day.
In answer to the salad bar question - I have always understood that it is advisable to stay away from cooked chilled foods like cold meats, soft cheeses, fish, pates and coleslaws. My favourite selection would normally be all of the above so just this time I'll have to walk on by...but once bump is here I'll be making sure I'm back there indulging to the full!

Never heard that in any of my pregnancies - have had many a salad bar, obviously still avoiding things like pate.

I think you may be being over cautious there :)

Interesting comments about the salad bar. I had never even questioned this after being told by my MW that deli counters and salad bars were no go areas - ooo Im starting to dream of a big plate piled high with lots of lovely goodies!

honestly, please don't worry about the salad bar. Any spa that poisoned its guests with lunch wouldn't be open very long and you are no more vulnerable to food poisoning when pregnant than at any other time. As others have said, there isa bit of a thing about over heating but jacuzzi would be ok. I went to the spa in Bath when i was pregnant with DS1 and swam for ages in their jacuzzi bit. DS now swims like a fish! Smile
