Hi I'm 28 weeks and finding my hips are really sore and aching in bed. I've tried sleeping with a pillow between my knees but always wake up in pain having lost the pillow! Can anyone give me any advice as I'm so grumpy without sleep (note to self - its only going to get worst!)

Ah, it's like you read my mind! I was just going to come and post this!
I'm 27 weeks, and tried sleeping with a pillow between my legs for the first time on Sunday night, which was like heaven, but then last night it made no difference whatsoever, and I still woke up in pain (pillow was still in place for me, though). It's getting to the stage where I wake up several times in the night in quite a lot of pain, which then often lasts for at least an hour or so after I wake up. Any advice greatly appreciated over here!

hi, i am 28 weeks... started sleeping with a pillow between my legs last week. not very comfortable. don't feel the difference. swimming has been quite helpful, though... also, if you do yoga, try doing double pigeon (really helps me to alleviate hip discomfort)

Im 34 weeks and looking for advice too! So fed up. I have tried sleeping upright but then baby is pressing on my bladder so have to keep peeing every 20mins! n

I'm expecting my 4th in 5wks and it's the first preg where my hips have been aching - and only in bed. I put it down to age (40)!

But i have noticed that it has generally eased over the last few nights but not sure why!?

Our joints (or something!) do loosen during pregnancy and that's prob what it is.

kingfix · 15/02/2011 20:23

oh gawd, me too!
And I'm desperate for sleep.

Anyone tried a dream genie? I don't know anything about them other than that they are a long pillow but have seen them mentioned on other threads. Think they cost a packet though.

tiredandgrumpy · 15/02/2011 20:27

Me too! Due may 7th. Hip pain has destroyed the last few nights' sleep and indigestion has also set in. Only thing which seems to ease it is to sleep almost sitting up, although I have found that putting something soft like a duvet or thin pillow under my hips makes it a bit better. I have a tubigrip which a physio gave me to go round my hips when I got spd last pregnancy. Am going to see if it helps tonight.

PukeyMummy · 15/02/2011 20:29

I am 14 weeks with DC2 and had this around 9 weeks - really sharp pain in my right hip when in bed.

I went to GP about it and also spoke to midwife. They said they could refer me to physio or get support aids if it stayed bad.

Luckily for me it has cleared up (for now) but I'm expecting it to come back in later pregnancy. I think I threw out my hip in labour with DD and that's the root cause.

You can pop a paracetemol (what GP told me to do) to alleviate the pain.

I have a Dream Genii pillow, can't say it really helped me with this problem though. I love it otherwise.

nicki1978 · 15/02/2011 20:31

I'm have the same problem too from last week (am 23 weeks on Monday). I thought it might have been due to my having joint hypomobility (restricted joint movement), but hadn't realised it could be part and parcel of being pregnant, lol. I am still quiet naive as this is my first pregnancy, lol. xx

Aw no there are loads of us but still no magic cure! Still hoping someone's going to come and along and impart a pearl of wisdom so we can all sleep soundly. Smile

I remember this. I found sleeping on a duvet helped a little.

jkklpu · 15/02/2011 21:08

Suffered from this, too and, in fact, it was at least a year or two after ds2 came along that my hips stopped aching after I'd been sitting down for too long.

justmilkpleasenosugar · 15/02/2011 21:36

Take a duvet and fold it in half and pop it under your sheet. I've heard this works, sadly I only found this out today and I'm 39 weeks...! Bugger xx

weefriend · 15/02/2011 21:40

I'm only 19 weeks and have been like this for a good few weeks already :(. It was terrible in my last pg too, by the end I was only sleeping for about an hour at a time. A pillow between my legs helps a bit, as does having a couple of duvets underneath me. I want to get a memory foam mattress topper but DH doesn't want to. Anyone tried that?

GruffalosGirl · 15/02/2011 22:40

The only thing I've found that eases this for me is swapping the side I lie on every hour when I wake.

I do sleep with the pilllow between my legs though but I've always done this so don't know if that's made a difference.

gysela · 16/02/2011 10:40

Glad to know I am not the only one suffering! Was beginning to blame it all on the position of the baby. This is my third and the first time I've been in so much pain.
I've tried the duvet and pillows; didnt work. DH brings me a hot water bottle in the middle of the night and it seems to do the trick until it gets cold.
Hope someone comes along soon with a solution...

Lauzifer · 16/02/2011 11:32

I'm 37 weeks and suffered really badly with aching hips and back. Last week i went out and bought a v shaped pillow. I put part of it under my bump and the other between my legs.
I managed to get a whole 8 hours sleep .... Heaven!
Because it's v-shaped i didn't lose it in the middle of the night unlike when i tried a normal pillow.

120 · 16/02/2011 11:37

I found putting a pillow behind me, lengthwise down my back helped, so I was sleeping on my side but not upright and could lean back a little. Hard to explain but if you try it you'll see what I mean. Hate hate hate the hip pain.

wetwelly · 16/02/2011 12:39

Hi all.. I have had 4 children and expect my 5th in the summer. I remember having this really badly in my 1st 2 pregnancies and had to change sides every hour! I have to say though that in between pregnancy 2 and 3 I lost a good deal of weight and have kept it off since. Interestingly, my hip pain never returned for pregnancies 3, 4 or 5!! So for me it must have been extra weight over my hip joints.. I know that isn't much help... just sharing..

eagerbeagle · 16/02/2011 13:04

I had this with DS and was referred to an obstetric physio.

She said that my quadriceps (muscle at the front of the thigh) were too tight and had me stretching them out for a min of 30 seconds each strecth, 2 times each leg every few hours or as often as I could remember. It did help but what helped more was going on mat leave and not sitting at a desk all day.

SuperLemonCrush · 16/02/2011 13:17

I was in agony with hip/back pain through two preganancies - this really helped me...but meant that DH had to sleep elsewhere! I got one of the base cushions from our couch (very firm, almost solid - pillows are just too soft) down one side of the bed and lay with my back against it. Then I propped up hips/bump with a firm pillow so I was sort of bookended in position. I think the problem lay in twisting the hips/back, I felt that the solid cushion gave me more of a feeling of lying on my back.

Kat3L · 16/02/2011 16:11

I've 34 weeks and have had hip pain for a few weeks now. I've got a v pillow that goes between my legs and under bump but the hips still hurt and I wake to turn over every hour or so. However, in the middle of last night for the first time I tried a normal pillow tucked under the hip that was touching the mattress - in addition to the V pillow - and I woke up nearly three hours later without a painful hip. It might just be luck but am definitely going to try it again tonight. My MW also suggested a warm bath and paracetamol before going to bed. Nice in theory but getting out of the bath - not so much getting in - is rather tricky now! It might be nice to try if you're a little earlier in your pregnancy though and/or able to manage baths okay. Good luck everyone.

theonlyhb2 · 16/02/2011 17:39

my hips hurt in bed, i am 14 weeks now and suffer from back pain. i think I shall use this as an excuse to buy a super kingsize bed.

i really want one of those long maternity pillows, can rest it between my legs and boobs!

growing3rdbump · 16/02/2011 17:56

I'm 28wks with 3rd baby and also struggling with achy hips. I've been sleeping with V cushion under bump and between knees and do manage to keep hold of it for the night (somehow!) I sleep on one side, then wake up aching and have to turn myself and my cushion over... Sooo tired!!!!

Seabrookscheeseandonion · 16/02/2011 18:13

Thanks everyone, so it seems duvet under the bedsheet and a v-shaped pillow are the way to go... Will try them out and pray for undisturbed sleep!
