Diathermy Loop- premature

Has anyone here had diathermy loop treatment?

A few years ago I had abnormal cells come up in a smear test.

Following analysis, I had diathermy loop treatment at hospital.

I've read online that this can lead to having a premature birth in pregnancy.

Has anyone had any experience if this is true, or is it just one of those things that I they say? Confused

I've had that done and have never heard of links with premature birth - will watch with interest.

Yes I did (like everyone does) a google search for diarthermy loop + pregnancy and the article that I was reading said that it can cause prematureness (is that even a word?? Smile) but I don't think drastically.

Anyone?

Hi

I had loop diathermy for CIN 2 in 2004. I got pregnant with DD in 2007 - gave the midwife my medical history, and asked about this as I'd heard the same thing. But midwife wasn't sure so referred me to consultant. He greeted me at my appointment by asking what I was doing there!? He said highly unlikely that there would be a problem, and promptly discharged me! I went overdue by 2 weeks, and was induced. No probs with the pregnancy and no probs with the birth either. (Although hospital midwife, when doing a sweep said 'have you had surgery down here? I can feel a scar' Confused )

Hope that helps

Yes, it's a risk factor for incompetent cervix which can result in a second trimester loss. You should as a bare minimum have the length of your cervix checked regularly in the peak risk time between 16 to 24 weeks. If the length falls below around 2.5cm you would need a rescue stitch for the pregnancy and for all future pregnancies.

Obviously not everyone has problems but you're more likely to than if you hadn't had it done.

I had a loop diathermy for CIN 3 in oct last year and before they done it they said just to let you know any future pregnancies probably wont go beyond 37wks. hope thats helped. he didnt, however, say how early x

I had it done in 2007 for CIN3. The consultant at the time told me all sorts about how it could effect my pregnancy.

I'm 24wks now & been referred to a consultant who is doing a couple of regular scans to keep an eye on the cervix but they aren't concerned at all.
I bled fir two weeks at week 10 & was convinced it was to do with the procedure but they assured me it wasn't.x

Oh thank you everyone, I am still waiting for the 10wk MW appointment, so i'll mention to her then that i've had it done and hopefully she can shed more light on things.

Interesting on the 37 weeks thing, I'll have to look into that.

Eeek I had no idea about any of this

apples82 · 16/02/2011 09:59

Me too EveryonesJealousOfGingers, I remember reading maybe premature, but I didn't know about needing more checks on cervix or that it could be as early as 37 weeks or earlier!

Crikey, roll on MW appointment so I can ask her about all this Confused.
