a bit early but does anyone know what ID I will need to register a child's birth for me and my hubby?

We didn't have to take anything at all

Flisspaps · 14/02/2011 11:50

At least, I don't recall having to take anything.

Ah, I was wondering this as well. I need to get a passport for baby by the time he is 3 months. I've heard you can register the birth at the hospital and be issued with a short birth certificate immediately. First, is this true and second, can this short certificate be used for the passport application? Anyone know?

Mahraih · 14/02/2011 12:07

boredbuthappy - it wasn't mentioned to us as a possibility. We need a passport for baby at 5 months, and will just have to rush it.

OP: I just booked baby's registration appointment and the guy on the phone didn't tell me to bring ID, just DP!

The short one can be used to get a passport. Idk about getting it in the hospital though.

boredbuthappy · 14/02/2011 12:11

Thanks!

wigglesrock · 14/02/2011 12:53

boredbuthappy I was able to reegister dd1 at hospital but not dd2, they had stopped doing it. They also only did it twice a week so it depended what days you were in.

Re: Passports - am going to have to get one done quickly for dc3 (due Wed!!) spoke to passport people (?) and apparently they've relaxed the rules a bit re very young babies and eyes opened etc so it should be a bit quicker and easier Grin

We're looking into this as well and was told we have to go to council office for birth registration. (You can find info on your council's website).
The website should also list any documents you'll need. We learned it's not done at the hospital anymore, too.

cocoachannel · 14/02/2011 17:50

That is very good news re. relaxing of rules for passport photos! Crazy system that they can no longer go on parent's, but I guess thereist have been reasons...!?

clarabella18 · 14/02/2011 19:13

Thought it had to be the full bc for getting a passport. I only got the short one when ds was born and had to go back and pay extra for the full one in order to get his passport.

eviscerateyourmemory · 14/02/2011 19:15

I think that if you are married you need to take your marriage cert.

thisisyesterday · 14/02/2011 19:28

yes, i believe you need the long BC for a passport

boredbuthappy · 14/02/2011 21:56

How long does it take to get the long BC?

thisisyesterday · 14/02/2011 22:00

i think we got ours all at the same time when we registered them

kiwijesta · 15/02/2011 07:35

No ID needed nor the marriage cert to register the birth. Went to post office yesterday and they suggest snappy snaps to take picture. They also said full birth cert was needed and that it takes 2 weeks to process. Costs £50 and for an extra £8 the post office will check it so you don't get it sent back. They (P.O) also do bookings where I live so no queuing!
Man, I sound like an advert for them, def not tho, hehe.

trixie123 · 15/02/2011 09:00

You get the BC at the registry office. If you are not married you both need to be there (as well as baby obviously). Interesting about the passport photos being a bit easier. We'll have to get DD done pretty quick when she's born as we wan;t to go away about 10 weeks later
