Hi
Sorry for a rather silly question.....but I am a first time mummy and just wanted to check...
I am due in april so have got quite a few long sleeved sleepsuits...but I am now worried if I need to get some short sleeved body suits/ vests. Are these for warmer weather or do they go under the sleepsuits.
Could some experienced mummies please help..
Thanks

Basic baby clothing is a short-sleeved vest under a long-sleeved sleepsuit, this would be fine in April in indoors. In really hot weather your baby will probably just be in a vest.

Congratulations on your pregnancy tlat. Maybe you could get one of those wall thermometers so you are happy with the room temperature, one less thing for first timer to worry about Smile.

onimolap · 12/02/2011 18:38

Another tip is not to buy too many. You can easily get more quickly unless you live really in the back of beyond. And you may get a very big baby (or a very small one), and if you are lucky, you may be given clothes.

CluckyKate · 12/02/2011 18:53

General rule of thumb is to put the baby in one more layer than you're wearing so some short-sleeved vests would be a good idea [smile}

thefurryone · 12/02/2011 19:22

Can I just join in and ask what is probably a stupid question about vests. Should these be ones without poppers at the bottom? I'm assuming that having two layers of poppers wouldn't be the done thing, but really don't have a clue about these things Blush

squiggleywiggler · 12/02/2011 19:26

We frequently have 2 layers of poppers even if it isn't the done thing Wink

Trouble with tops/vests without poppers is that they ride up annoyingly all the time...

Firawla · 12/02/2011 19:27

its normally the ones with the poppers on otherwise they will ride up, two layers of poppers is fine. the without poppers tends to be for when they are a bit older like 2 yr olds

knittymum · 12/02/2011 19:35

Poppers are awesome! They shouldn't be uncomfortable for the baby as he'll have a nappy in the way anyway. I had short sleeved vests and babygros for both of mine, with cardigans over the top on cooler days. And sometimes I even went mad and put them in 'real' clothes!

MrsNoggin · 12/02/2011 19:39

Although vests without poppers are good for newborns because they squeeze down less on the umbilical cord. I got some from mothercare for DD a few years ago, I should think they still do them. And they do up with little velcro tabs, more like a shirt IYSWIM, so you dont have to tug them over a tiny fragile head!

Went straight to regular popper vests when she outgrew them though - much easier to get hold of.

LoopyLoopsPoopaScoop · 12/02/2011 20:18

I think you need at least 6 vests, 6 babygros and 2 cardis, as well as a hat. That allows you a few changes a day, washing every day/every other day (newborns are sick a lot and poo has escapist qualities!). Also a few changes of moses/cot sheet for the same reason, and blankets.

I would definitely have a vest under the sleepsuit most of the time, unless it was really quite warm. Probably in April a cardi as well, but my house isn't overly warm.

Don't worry about poppers, nothing wrong with there being 2 lots.

LoopyLoopsPoopaScoop · 12/02/2011 20:20

PS a friend bought some little velcro vests and sleepsuits for DD as she was prem and in NICU (good for not getting caught in cables) but the hospital just use normal popper ones, no more hassle really, just a little more scary to put on when they are tiny and have all kinds of tubes attached to them.

thefurryone · 12/02/2011 20:26

Oh so two sets of poppers is fine then, and people more likely to laugh at me for only having one set than for having two Smile

Thanks everyone, I think I need to buy some kind of instruction manual.

LoopyLoopsPoopaScoop · 12/02/2011 20:31

ep, 2 sets is normal IME.

Don't start worrying about things people could laugh at you about, for god's sake!

Haynes (car manual people) do an instruction manual for babies, DH found it useful! here

bloomingnora · 12/02/2011 20:33

Like this? Grin

It's quite good, actually!

bloomingnora · 12/02/2011 20:33

Beat me to it!

We have the Dad manual too, all about making kites and stuff. Not that useful for a newborn, but still fun!

I love coming across threads like this. All the questions I feel too uncomfortable to ask. When I ask other mums I get looked at like its actually common sense and I should know this already Hmm So reassuring to see others don't know either :)

bloomingnora · 12/02/2011 20:44

The poo pictures are hilarious! But quite helpful....

thefurryone · 12/02/2011 20:58

I wasn't really serious about the laughing I'm just worried about being totally out of my depth. I'm 34 years old and have a pretty good handle and most aspects of my life, so feeling pretty shit scared daunted that in 8 - 12 weeks time I'll have a baby to look after and I still don't have a clue about loads of the more practical aspects.

Loving the Hayes Manual will definitely put it on the shopping list for me DH Smile
