Can anyone recommend a good NHS maternity hospital in North London? We are currently looking at the Royal free and North Middlesex. We are based in Palmers Green. Thank you...

Portland is great if you are considering a private route.

Wow its really nice of you all sharing your experiences. I am now 3 months pregnant and currently out of UK, and would be travelling back to London when I am on my 5th month end. I have a registered GP in east London, which i want to change for sure as his services are awful and didnt even went to him for informing that i am pregnant but I guess it would not be an issue if I want to give birth to a baby using services of private hospital or maybe nhs. I am just worried if it will be ok for private hospitals or nhs to register me in the hospital after I arrived in UK that would be when I am 6th month pregnant? or they would not take me in as a patient cause i have not registered in my early pregnancy?
or shall i register now (ie buying one of the selected package of the private hospitals) so that I dont have any problems when I arrive in UK.

I am already consulting doctors here in the countrys best hospital from which I can give the hospital all the requested test and other reports.

Excuse my English!!!

Thanks
Naureen.

Anyone got any league tables please. Its North Mid or Barnet and Chase Farm ( but Chase farm will have closed by the time I give birth)

Thank you

I had DS at the Whittington. Was generally happy and they do have a birth centre with pools etc. the downside is that they don't have top level neonatal ICU there. So if your newborn needs it s/he will be transferred. You can go too if you are well enough but if you are too ill to move you will be separated and your visitors/ DP will have to dash between the two

bonzo77 · 24/01/2012 14:37

naureen an NhS hospital will take you even if you turn up in labour. Lots of women move hospitals during pregnancy.

I had DD in Queen Charlotte's and can recommend. They have the mid-wife led unit there too and if any complications you can quickly be whisked to labour ward. I never really saw the same midwife in the run-up, although apparently they're split into smaller teams so it should happen, just didn't for me. Due to raised BP I wasn't allowed the water birth at the last minute but found the mid-wives brilliant on the labour ward too.
The post-natal care was a bit hit & miss, different MW saying different things, all over 'topping up baby' resist - resist - resist. Sorry but they had we support bf posters in every room and still tried to make me wake my baby to feed her when we'd been doing absolutely fine. Still the bf counsellor 'Auntie Vicky' was fabulous and will have given them short shrift. Good luck.

Another vote for queen charlottes for difficult pregnancies and poorly babies.

I had dS2 there 2 weeks ago after a complicated pg (cervix probs followed by obstetric cholastasis at 31 weeks). The antenatal care was outstanding, I was thoroughly checked, treated and reassured on a very regular basis.

DS2 was induced early and spent time in neonatal intensive care, I could not have wished for better care and support for DS2 and for us as parents.

I am high risk because of diabetes, and have been very happy with UCLH. After a couple of bad experiences at the royal free (more on that below), we asked around among some doctor friends, and found out they went to UCLH for their babies. I feel really well looked after, although I'm only 20 weeks so can't speak about the actual labour experience yet.

Regarding the royal free, I had a 12-week miscarriage and an ectopic pregnancy there. The midwife team seemed ok, but if you think there is any chance you will end up in the EPU, I'd recommend avoiding that hospital. Not only did they lose my notes, but the main consultant just doesn't seem to care. I never spoke to him (he was always too busy to see me), but he told the nurses to cancel my follow up appointments twice. The first time, it landed me in the A&E. The second time, I called the doctor who actually saw me and got it overridden.

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone could advise on any health insurance policies that cover birth, I am looking into health insurance for the first time and its very hard to see what is actually included?!

Thank you x

A vote for the Homerton! My recent experience was pretty amazing - the facilities are excellent, and I felt very well cared for by the consultants, midwives and nurses. The post natal care was also v good despite my low expectations! Smile

MissHC · 06/08/2013 10:13

LucyLovea - this is a very old thread with a different subject than your question. Sorry I can't help you but might be better starting your own thread?

BigBongTheory · 06/08/2013 11:53

DH had good cover through work with bupa (highest level i think) Had I needed a csection it would have covered that privately and three or four days in hospital afterwards.

I can't imagine any policybwould cover antenatal care or the birth since they would forever be paying out.

Carsoay · 23/07/2014 11:40

Can anyone share their experience in Homerton Hospital?
I saw really extreme reviews on the net so am not sure...

Thanks xxx

I wouldn't advise that you monitor your own pregnancy, especially with your previous pregnancy.

All NHS hospitals are busy, labour wards are no exception. Other people's good and bad experiences are subjective.

If you want comprehensive, dedicated care then I would suggest to go private. I think a package can cost around £15k.

bayrans · 23/07/2014 11:56

Oops, just realised how old this thread is! Still, my sentiment is the same.
