Heart racing when not active

Hi

Had anyone else had this? I'm 30 weeks and I've noticed it a few times recently. I've had quite bad water retention in my legs and am generally getting tired more easily but this seems quite strange. I had it last night when I was lying in bed and hadn't been doing anything remotely active for a couple of hours. I'm getting a bit stressed as I've only got 7 weeks left at work, maybe that's it. Anyone got any advice?

Cheers.

Hi JoEW,

I would advise that you contact your mw/consultant to see whether you should go in for blood pressure and other checks.

I experienced the same at about 32 weeks...heart palpitations as well as feeling faint, and my arms felt a bit tingly...this was during my last week at work before taking mat leave for one year!!! The stress of the handover as well as the idea of the upcoming labour (and finding a new flat) was unbearable. I went to the A&E and had high b/p when sitting, but normal b/p when standing (postural hypertension?). All other tests results were fine. The following week, after mat leave started, I went to a cardiologist who specialised in pregnancy, and my heart and pulse rates were normal...he summarised it as either an inner ear virus that was going away (that would explain the dizziness), or the stress / hypertension from work. He and my consultant also wondered whether I was slightly dehydrated, so continue to drink loads of water!

Now at 36 weeks I can take it easy during the days, not rush to work, keep a jug of water by my side, do everything at my own snail's pace, and all tests have come back normal.

Of course you would like to get things done properly, but SLOW DOWN, and try to sleep/nap when/if you can! Sometimes we impose too much stress on ourselves, thinking we can do everything like before we were carrying a little human inside us... Whether it's stress or something else, it's always a good idea to share your symptoms with your caregiver.

Hopefully you'll be able to get a check up soon and everything will be fine and you'll enjoy the bliss (and boredom) of mat leave before your LO arrives! :)

i have suffered from quite bad hear palpitations since i was 9. they stopped when i was about 17 and then came back during both pregnancies. i had to wear a portable heart monitor, and really had to take things slowly. as soon as i felt them coming on i had to lie down, well, i had no choice, i could barely lift my head when they happened anyway. speak to your midwife but i am not sure if they can do anything. i had to cut out as much caffein as possible and it really helped.

Thanks both. Yes, I think I might be overdoing it a bit. BP was creeping up at last midwife appointment, though not especially high. I have another doc appointment next week so I'll mention it there too. Might be wise to cut out caffine again too. I was really good in the first 12 weeks but have reverted to drinking several cups of tea a day again now.

yes i was drinking about 4/5 cups of tea a day. i just changed to caffeine free and decaf green tea and it pretty much solved teh problem.

When I get heart racing and tingly feeling in my arms, it is from panic/anxiety. Sometimes it turns into full-blown panic attacks and other times I get through it with deep breathing.
