there's a bit of form filling, you are told your due date and I think they do bloods/test your urine and blood pressure, and they should establish your BMI. All gets recorded and you are given your records to carry around with you (photocopy them before you deliver as you don't get them back!)
You might get a bounty pack (can't remember) and there are a couple of NHS books given to first time mums too. You should also get the form for free prescriptions.

tell them what you know and confirm later, they just need to know there is a risk......

At mine the doctor gave me a form to fill in to refer me to the MW (basically, name and address, that's it) and asked me when I thought I was due.

Told me the MW would be in touch with a booking in appointment to take place at about 12 weeks.

Aah it depends. In our area you see the GP to refer you to a midwife. The consultation goes like this:

"I'm pregnant"
"Are you taking folic acid?"
"Yes."
"Date of last period?"
"Whenever"
"Okay, noted, don't eat any sharks, see the midwife at 8 weeks"

Takes about 45 seconds.

Our old area you didn't bother seeing a gp at all. Do your gps do any of the actual care? The blood tests, bp, bmi, family history stuff is done during your booking in appointment. In most areas this is with your midwife at around 8-10 weeks but in some places it's not until 12 weeks and combined with your dating scan.

The stuff that supadupa talks about is usually done at the booking in appointment (was with me)

supadupapoopascoopa · 08/02/2011 15:41

aha! I was referring to the booking in appointment! well spotted Fliss

Haha I love the 'don't eat any sharks' bit haha. A lot of doctors don't even see you anymore they just ask you to make appointment with midwife. It does get more exciting tho I promise.
Oh and congratulations.

I've had 3 pregnancies and the GP hasn't confirmed the pregnancy. Saw GP at 8 weeks to basically get a referral to midwife. Didn't see GP at all with current one, I rang, told them I was pregnant, receptionist made a booking appt for me at 10 weeks with midwife, then had dating scan at 12 weeks. Congratulations Grin

I was asked 'do you want to keep the baby?' Shock.

CilantroLarry · 08/02/2011 16:04

My GP asked if I liked sailing.

Ragwort Shock I suppose, being utterly, utterly generous that nowadays GPs aren't involved in pregnancy and generally only see women in the first trimester who are in a situation where 'do you want to keep the baby' is relevant. But that's being generous.

i was asked the date of my period then me wanted to masaage my stomach to see if i had a kidney infection/uti as i was peeing all the time.
