Waxing when pregnant

I have heard that it is more painful to get a bikini wax when pregnant. I normally just keep things trimmed up myself, but these darn pregnancy hormones have things particularly unkempt and there just seems to be more of it down there.(sorry TMI) It just makes me feel so unattractive and the thought of what it will be like by the time I am ready to deliver honestly frightens me. I really want to get professional help, and I think the only solution at this point is to go for a Brazilian. I have had it done a few times before, but never when pregnant. Anyone had a similar experience?

My beautician told me that she has to go from having her regular Hollywood to a less severe wax during later pregnancy as it hurts much more.
I am only 24 weeks & think I am going to do the same soon.
Maybe if you tell them you aren't sure how much you want off so that they do it in stages where it wont look odd if they have to stop half way through?

You can always use immac at home to finish it off or as an alternative.

I've carried on getting waxes throughout my pg, I am now 29 weeks.

Fact is that waxing is never a walk in the park, pg or not. I haven't noticed that much diff TBH, but just ask your waxing person to be quick!

I like to at least try and be sexy, even when pg.

Has anyone used an epilator? I can't remember where but I'm sure I read somewhere you're not supposed to use them in pregnancy. It's just a pain to have to shave so often, as my hair seems to have multiplied!

clarkland · 07/02/2011 20:39

Had a bikini wax today I'm 33 weeks pregnant!!! OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!! But no more than usual.

cece123 · 07/02/2011 22:35

Froggy81, i have read on the leaflet that came with my epilator that if you are pg you should not use it. Not sure of the medical reasons why pg women can't use it though. And your right it's a bloody pain having to shave so often.

EauRouge · 08/02/2011 08:05

I used my epilator the during my first pregnancy. I haven't bothered this time, I think the experience of having a MW peer quite closely at my haemorrhoids shortly after DD arrived pushed my embarrassment threshold up a fair bit Blush I'm not doing with any hair removal this time before my due date, can't be bothered!

ckny1 · 08/02/2011 09:54

I'm scheduled for a regular bikini wax on Thurs (am too frightened for anything else at this stage), though the salon recommended that I take paracetemol (after checking in w/ mw) if I wanted to consider more. Not sure if I want to risk the baby's health for my upkeep! Hmm

I've been having my bikini waxes, and they do hurt more than usual, but not so much so that I can't bear them! Although I have been telling her not to go too high and just do me a quick 'trim' for tidiness

BUnderTheBonnet · 08/02/2011 14:35

I've had a full Hollywood all through this pregnancy (am now 37 weeks) and I'm going for, hopefully, my last pre-birth one tomorrow.

I don't think it hurts much more than it did before to be honest, but I go to a lady who uses the really old-fashioned, spoon-it-on wax, rather than the stuff you roll on and remove with strips of linen, which I think really helps. I must say I am looking forward to things being nice and tidy down there when I give birth, and it will be easier to keep clean afterwards. My beautician has suggested I take a few business cards in case anyone comments on it!!!

I am very dark haired and naturally quite hairy too, so I don't think it needs to be a nightmare. But I do second the suggestion that they start at the outside and work their way in symmetrically so you can call a halt if you need to. You can always go a bit further in next time. And I don't the bits "underneath" as painful as the bits on the top either.

BTW, I've also had my legs waxed and they've been brilliant while I've been pg - much less regrowth and almost pain free.

jollyjester · 08/02/2011 22:16

At my booking appt the midwife gave me a leaflet and pointed out that the hospital where I'm delivering ask that 6 weeks prior to due date you dont wax or shave or anything your area! (I'll be a monster by that stage Grin )
They said its in case of needing a CS and any small cuts or grazes from waxing or shaving could get infected more easily.

Anyone else heard this?

thornykate · 08/02/2011 22:43

Wow, never heard that jollyj would love to see what research they have based that on.

Won't be enough to stop me heading off for a brazillian anyway!

kitcat83 · 08/02/2011 22:49

Just make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing...

In my first pregnancy I had a wax at about 33weeks and the girl nearly killed me. I had bruising and torn skin, not what you want when pregnant and tender. This was at a reputable salon too. I complained and had to show the manager two days after and I now get free waxing, yes it was that bad.

Funnily enough I dont let that girl come anywhere near me and I dont plan to get a wax this time round, maybe just a little trim and immac?!!! Wink

JBrd · 09/02/2011 17:04

I had a bikini wax a few weeks aog, and although I didn't find it any more painful than usual, I also found that my skin reacted a lot more sensitive than before. I ended up having a lot of problems with ingrown hairs and subsequent infections - possibly to to with the fact that the 'area down there' is getting more and more squashed and gets less and less air, which combined with the waxing might just be too much. Normally I would get the odd ingrown hair, but then would be able to take care of it very easily. Now I can't see or reach anything...

I'm thinking of switching to Veet and getting DH to do it Grin

rrreow · 10/02/2011 18:10

I used to go for regular waxing (bikini, underarm, lower leg) before I was pregnant. It's obviously never pleasant, but definitely bearable (apart from bikini wax, that's just horrible either way).

Then I went while about 8 weeks pregnant and immediately swore it off for the rest of my pregnancy. Even the leg waxing was incredibly painful!

I think it will depend on your own pain threshold and maybe also the stage of your pregnancy. I'd say just give it a try. If it's very painful, at least you know it's only temporary.

DaisyFields · 11/02/2011 17:49

I'm 24 weeks and have found the redness lasts longer and worse ingrowing hairs as time has gone on. The main worry is (tmi) that I've suddenly had an increase in discharge, that may be embarrassing!

Snowfalls108 · 11/02/2011 20:11

Weird - I find waxing much less painful when pregnant.

mouffloncake · 11/02/2011 21:14

I'm a beauty therapist & have my own salon. im 24wks.

Many of my pg ladies report that waxing is more sensitive at this time.
I gave myself a brazilian (for what will be the last time in a while) two days ago & found it more uncomfortably but put that down to not meing able to get the correct angle lol.

Karoleann · 11/02/2011 21:25

I get them to use hot wax, which is much less painful. I don't find it any worse mind than pre-pregnancy.
