What's the consensus nowadays on hairdye when pregnant?

This is DC3 and for my 2 previous pregnancies, I did not colour my hair and looked about 15 years older after 9 month. I would love to keep on dyeing it this time around.
I see many pregnant ladies who do die their hair. Is it OK then? I was worried about spreading chemicals on my scalp.

Oh God I do, too much grey, I don't do it myself, my one treat throughout pregnancy is regular hairdresser trips. My hair grows like wildfire when I'm pregnant and am old enough in real life without my hair ageing me Grin

I always colour mine (I really don't want black roots alongside my fat ankles and fat face :))

Have done in all 5 pregnancies. I have never heard any evidence to suggest its bad.

My pregnancy book recommends it as a way of treating yourself...

my pregnancy book said nothing wrong with it but have highlights done if you can rather than an all over colour because the dye doesn't touch your scalp, also avoid inhaling chemicals by being in a well ventilated room.

Good. It's true that I feel bloated and fat enough as it is, if I also have to let my hair go totally grey, I just look a total mess.
Despite all my sacrifices in my 2 first pregnancies, both DCs have eczema.
Appointment booked :-)

I died my hair about five weeks ago. I read in my pregnancy book that you would have to be using BUCKET loads of dye for it too affect you or the baby !

It makes you feel a lot better.... ! x

The smell of the ammonia used to make me feel woozy, but there are non ammonia hair dyes you can use, or natural dyes like Henna if you are worried and have dark hair. I have never heard of any ill effects as a result of the normal dyes though.

I did my hair this weekend. I checked with my MW and she just said to not do it for as long as you can possibly stand not to do it. Ideally get one of the dyes (if you are doing it yourself at home) that only have to be on for 10 minutes.

I will have at least 2 more hair appointments for highlights before my EDD! Anything that makes you feel good....

NHS website says there is no evidence that it is harmful.

Anecdotally I dyed mine every 3-4 weeks from 12 weeks .

Maternelle · 07/02/2011 18:49

I am 21 weeks and I REALLY need to do something.
