Preg (and bleeding) or not post miscarriage?? Desperately seeking an answer!

This is a complicated one but if you can be bothered to read through my dilemma and can help I'd be really grateful...

I miscarried for the 2nd time at the end of last yr and had an EPRC/D&C on 31st Dec. I was 8 weeks.

Last time (a natural miscarriage at 12 weeks, embryo stopped growing at 7 weeks) I got my period about 24 days later, so I assumed it would be similar this time round. I did an ovulation test at around day 10 and it gave me the smiley face, so we had sex 3 times over the next 3 days. We've always been quite lucky in getting pregnant quickly. I did a positive preg test when I reckon my period was due (24th Jan) and it was positive. It said I was 2-3 weeks from conception.

So I assumed I was pregnant BUT then I read too much on the internet and called Clearblue and people were saying that I could still get a positive ovulation test AND a positive pregnancy test because of the miscarriage rather than a new pregnancy.

So was I pregnant or just hormones left over from the miscarriage?

I have done three more pregnancy tests and one ovulation test since and they've all come out positive (apparently the ovulation test should always read positive if you're pregnant as the hormones are pretty similar). But to add to the complication the preg test that tells you how many weeks since conception said 1-2 weeks (less than it had said before and not quite long enough to ring true). So, whether pregnant or not, did this mean that my hormones were going down?

The latest is that now I've started spotting - not really red blood but dark brown that seems to come in the afternoons.

There are so many scenarios I don't know what to think. I am going to have an early scan for some answers but that's a couple of weeks away.

  • Maybe I'm not pregnant at all and this is my first period (but it's not like a real period)
  • Maybe I'm not pregnant at all and my body is all over the place (but i was fine last time and given that I had the op this time around was hoping it would go back to normal at least as quickly as it did with a natural miscarriage)
  • Maybe I was pregnant and I'm going through a chemical miscarriage (but wouldn't that be heavier / red blood, even clots?)
  • Maybe I'm pregnant and implantation bleeding
  • Maybe I'm pregnant and about to miscarry again.

I AM GOING CRAZY!!!!
Anyone have any idea or thoughts? I can't bear the idea of miscarrying for the 3rd time, that makes me worry that something's wrong and I'll never have another baby. My first pregnancy was great by the way, no problems and our lovely son is almost 2.

x

Just wanted to bump you and wish you the best of luck, it must be so worrying so I'll be thinking of you!

Hi SillyCalamari

All of the options you've presented are feasible. Did you do a pg test 2 weeks after mc to make sure you got a negative result? That's what I was advised with my mc, just to avoid this kind of confusion.

I would say it's highly likely you are pg again but unless you had a negative result on a pg test after the mc you won't know for sure until you've been checked out.

Can you arrange an appointment at your local gynae unit/epu? If they won't give you a scan they could take a blood test. If you have HCG showing then chances are you're pg. They should then re-test 48 hour later and if HCG has risen there's your answer. You should definitely get the bleeding checked out anyway, this shouldn't be anything to do with your mc now.

Good luck

Thanks chocadoodle.
No I didn't do a pregnancy test after the m/c. They didn't mention that at the hospital. I remember now that they did recommend that after my first m/c but I forgot about that this time around, amongst all the upset.

I will call the early preg unit at the hospital and see what they say.

Thanks again. I know no one can give me a definitive answer but it's nice to just share the problem
