At what stage did you see a consultant regarding birth options?

Hi.
It was decided by my midwife that I should see a consultant to discuss birth options as she feels a C-sect may be the best thing for me.
She sent the forms off before xmas and Ive still not heard anything, last time I saw MW she said the consultant had been on holiday and she had some ladies at 38 weeks who STILL hadnt seen her! I just wondered what the normal stage is to see a consultant because I would love to get it all sorted in my head and Ive been told I need to see her and go away and discuss options and go back but I feel like Im running out of time.

Im 32 weeks, thanks x

We see them here (The Wirral) at 20 weeks if we are flagged as high risk but from reading posts on here it seems like every trust has a completely different policy.

Ok thanks Gruffalosgirl, Just wondering if I should be worrying yet Confused

I had my appointment at 36 weeks. Where I am they dont book in C Sections too far in advance, so I had the appointment and got the CS date at it.

tlise · 05/02/2011 15:02

I had mine at 20 weeks when I had the anomoly scan :)

Tiredmumno1 · 05/02/2011 16:19

We first spoke about it with consultant at 28 weeks, was advised to have a think about it, went back at 34 weeks to make a decision and be booked in for section

I really feel like I should of ssen her by now, I feel a bit in limbo because im not sure if she will say yes you should have a Csect or not. Im not seeing my Midwife until the end of the month now and feel I shouldnt keep on at her because she cant make the appointment any quicker? But I dont want to get to later on and still not know where I stand or go into early labour and because ive not been written up for a section they wont give me one and I will have the problems which the midwife thinks I will have?
Not sure what to do really x

Do you have a consultant at the hospital?

eviscerateyourmemory · 05/02/2011 19:09

What problem does the midwife think you might have?

If you did go into early labour and it became apparent that you needed a section then you would get one.

justbeingmummy · 05/02/2011 19:51

Tiredmummo - the consultant at the hospital is who im waiting to see.

Eviscerateyourmemory - I broke my tailbone when I was younger and it broke again when I gave birth to my DC1 and took over a year to heal, the MW said it will no doubt happen again and if it keeps breaking it wont heal. I also suffered a quite bad tear which got badly infected and left scarring, My DC1 was born quickly and she thinks this one could be quicker and we live an hour away from the nearest hospital and finally he is a big baby.
Its not definate I will need one hence why Im in limbo about it, and I dont know if I went into early labour if they would just do a section on my say so or not or if there would even be time? x

Okay, have you made the actual decision about if you would prefer to have a section yet, thats the first obstacle

justbeingmummy · 05/02/2011 21:14

I personally agree with the MW and think the C-sect would be best for me and baby, because the thought of breaking my tailbone again anlong with the other complications is not appealing, I do know that having a C-sect is not an easy option and it is still a major op with a recovery time and if the MW said there was a chance all would be fine I wouldnt mind risking it so much but I was in agony for ages and out of it on really strong antibiotics for weeks too.
However if the consultant thinks its not the right choice I would listen and trust her, plus the midwife wont agree until she has heard what the consultant says x

Well obviously you can make the decision and they will have to go along with that.

Tbh what you have said i would say the consultant would agree.

Can you maybe give the hospital a call, and see when you can get an appt, and explain your concerns

justbeingmummy · 05/02/2011 22:42

Thanks Tiredmumno1 - im just worried if things do happen and its not in my birthing plans especially if things happen quickly they are not going to go with what I say, just think I will feel happier when I know what the plan is.

I will try and ring the hospital on Monday and see what sort of waiting time there is.

Thanks for all your help :)

Good luck, and remember its your decision, and even if anything started before you get to have your section, you can still have one if you are in labour, just make sure its in your birth plan so they know that its your wishes to proceed how you would like

Let us know how you get on, i am sure you will be fine x

IndigoOrchid · 06/02/2011 07:39

I understand what you are saying. In my opinion, planning now for a CS has advantages. Emotionally, you can get used to it. Practically, you can find out what you should and shouldn't do afterward, and for how long, and plan to get the help you need (longer paternity leave? family?) or even buy equipment according to your expected needs.

Maybe it'd be useful to write a list of thoughts and questions before you phone the hospital, ones your midwife can't answer, so you aren't fobbed off by whomever you speak to.

Dealing with the unknown of how likely will I reinjure myself if I go through VB, how long would that recovery be, what treatment would be available?... in my opinion it's best to deal with certainty than uncertainty, so the sooner it's decided the better.

Good luck

justbeingmummy · 06/02/2011 09:30

Thanks alot Tiredmumno1 :)

Indigoorchid - This is my problem exactly, I am in the mind set that I am having one, Ive read up on it, brought the stuff I think I will need and sorted out help for after and I might not even be having one! Although I know if I do have a VB I will need the help anyway, plus everyone keeps asking me whats happening and I dont know! Its so frustrating.
Anyway I will ring tomorrow and let you know, fingers crossed! x

Hi Ladies,
Just wanted to let you all know I rang the consultants secetary this morning and she said there has just been an appointment booked for me for 10th March. I told her I was a bit worried because I would be 37 weeks by then so she put me through to a lovely lady who squeezed me in to her clinic in 2 weeks time.
Feel very relieved that I know when Im going to see her. Thankyou for all your help and support :) x

I'm glad it's all sorted for you and you have a closer date. There's nothing as bad as worrying because you don't know what's going on this late in a pregnancy. Hope the appointment goes well

justbeingmummy · 07/02/2011 13:59

Thanks GruffalosGirl - it is defo a weight off my mind :)
