do U need cot bumpers?? when u buy a cot.

I know new mattress. with an attached sheet, hanging mobile, baby light. But I have read somewhere that they can be dangerous..is this right? Hmm

I did see something that attaches around the outside of the cot, it looks like mesh and is not tied on but apparently protects their arms from getting through the gaps in the wood. its not cute, but I am not too worried about that... thanks for the info. Smile

I didn't have any sort of cot bumper for any of my three DC. I didn't have any problems with banging heads/arms getting stuck.

mum295 · 04/02/2011 22:00

You don't need one. MIL made one for DD so we used it, but I wouldn't have gone out and bought one.

GruffalosGirl · 04/02/2011 23:41

They are supposed to be dangerous as they prevent air flow around the baby and so aren't recommended for SIDS reasons.

We never had a problem with our DS getting stuck/banging himself without them.

midori1999 · 04/02/2011 23:56

Gruffalosgirl, I always thought that, but the FSIDS website says they are not a cot death risk.

Some sites do site them as dangerous for other reasons though.

No, you don't need one. They restrict airflow and are a pointless waste of money.

DuelingFanjo · 05/02/2011 00:17

I have wondered about this. DS flails around and sticks his arms through the cradle. Isn't this dangerous or should I just leave him to it?

JarethTheGoblinKing · 05/02/2011 00:28

DuellingFanjo. I have the answer:

Oh, didn't know they were not seen as a risk for this now. I did always wonder why the moses basket was ok but the cot bumpers weren't when there's much more reduced air flow in a moses basket.

Still wouldn't say that you need them though, babies will move their arms or legs if they hurt cause they're through the bars.

Asteria · 05/02/2011 00:49

only if you live in a draughty old house like mine - otherwise not really much point

growing3rdbump · 05/02/2011 13:46

I wouldn't use one as they are thought to be dangerous.

onimolap · 05/02/2011 14:06

They've been regarded as dangerous for years now, as I remember similar advice from over a decade ago.

But manufacturer's just keep going, as they're not so dangerous as to be banned. But why spend money on something that's iffy?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 05/02/2011 14:52

Personally I wouldn't bother. With both of mine they point blank refused to sleep anywhere but with me for longer than the recommended age limit for cot bumpers. If I'd bought them I would have been kicking myself.

Save your money. I always think that the less money I spend on stuff for the baby, the longer I can afford to say off work Smile

mama2alex · 05/02/2011 15:41

You don't need one but if you have a baby like mine who always gets his arms stuck and loses his dummy, they come in handy. I have this cot bumper, much safer than the padded ones and covers the whole cot rather than just the top.

pettyprudence · 05/02/2011 15:54

I bought a baby bale which comes with a cot bumper which i will use purely to make the cotbed look a bit cosier - baby is going to be miles from the head anyway and i will be mightly impressed if they can wriggle that far in the fist couple of months anyway (although im sure i will have a g+t child Grin). If it hadnt come in a pack though i probably wouldn't have bought one because they seem to be fairly pointless and nothing more than decoration? Not sure about a bumper suffocating a baby though - i can't add that one up Confused
