Am 33 weeks pg, 1st baby, due 26.3
Went to get some plain white baby gro's to wash pre arrival... oh the choice!
I intended to get white long sleeve long leg packs (sleep suits??) but both sainsburys & next had sold out of newborn size... then I realised they ahd plenty of the sleeveless / legless ones (vests?) but thought they might be a bit cold for march - SO..
what do I need and how many for first few weeks - dont know what we're having, so will be plain, and then where is best to get them from?
Thanks for all suggestions - this was meant to be the simple bit!

yes you want sleepsuits/babygros which have long sleeves and long legs with feet in

m&s and mothercare do plain ones too

you will want vests as well though, because it is unlikely to be warm enough in march to only have baby in a sleepsuit

DevonDumplin · 04/02/2011 19:33

You'll need both, sleepsuits and vests. The vests (long or short sleaved depending on weather/temp in house) go under the sleepsuits.

I hope that's helping.

Plenty of sleepsuits (long sleeve/long leg).

You will also need plenty of vests too (sometimes called bodysuits). I would get a mixture of long sleeve and short sleeve. I wouldn't bother with sleeveless at the minute - wait and see what the summer weather is like and what size your DC is at that point.

Check the weight as well as the size as it varies from shop to shop. E.g. in Next their newboorn size was equivalent to approx 7.5lb. As my DD was born at 8lb5 she never even wore them.

A lot of the other shops are more generous though e.g. mothercare.

You'll want to layer a sleepsuit over a vest, as the others have said. I would get long sleeve vests and sleepsuits in newborn - highly unlikely to be too warm for just a long sleeve vest in march. And by the time your baby has grown out of them, you'll have a better idea what you need.

Asda do really cheap plain white sleepsuits. I've bulk bought a ton of them. Grin

I'd get a pack of sleepsuits, then one pack of long sleeved bodysuits and one pack of short sleeved bodysuits. Then you can just see how warm it is.

You may find some are better for day, some for night.

My DD was 6lb 14oz when she was born and I had a 3 pack of sleepsuits from next (which are up to 7.5lb). They were the only ones small enough for her so I had to keep washing them.

Bodysuits don't seem to matter so much about the size so I wouldn't worry about buying too many. DD was in newborn bodysuits until she was about 10 weeks even though she was about 12lb.

Make sure you've got some warm things for outdoors too like cardis and snowsuits.

I had newborn size from mothercare and they were far too big for 7lb DS! Agree asda is great for cheap plain babygros and the sizes are smaller than mothercare.

Sainsbury sleepsuit have little fold over sleeves so you don't have to use mits. - I found this type to be great when DS born. I think Matalan stocks them too.

Buy plenty as you do need a lot of changes in the early days especially if you have a sicky baby like we did.

Asda do starter packs with 3 vests, 3 babygros, mittens, hat and shoes for something like £7. I had a couple of these in newborn size

I've found Mothercare are quite big for the size, and Next are HUGE! Not so much in the newborn size, but DS jeans now fall off him!
